Product Information

"Of all the people who have affected by my life and influence the choices I've made, none has been more important than my father." So begins the autobiography of legendary boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas, who grew from the rebellious son of a doctor to a man who embraces, and lives by, his father's values and code. In this gritty, spellbinding tale, Atlas recounts his fascinating life -- as a juvenile delinquent on the streets of Staten Island; as a boxer and Golden Gloves champion under the tutelage of famed trainer Cus D'Amato; as a companion to the dangerous, unpredictable Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, up until the day Gravano turned rat and brought down crime boss John Gotti; and as a trainer of champions and contenders, among them fourteen-year-old Mike Tyson and heavyweight Michael Moorer, whom he led to the crown with a win over Evander Holyfield. Equally engrossing are Teddy Atlas's accounts of training dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp for her successful comeback at age forty-two; his work with actor Willem Dafoe, preparing him for his role as a concentration camp boxer in the film Triumph of the Spirit; his journey to Poland to choreograph the film's boxing scenes; and his own performance in movies such as Play It to the Bone. In sharing his stories, Atlas reveals the philosophy by which he lives. Like Teddy Atlas -- inimitable, tough, honest, and wise -- this book inspires. It is about so much more than boxing. It is a story of overcoming hardships, of compassion for those in need, of tremendous personal integrity, and of personal and professional triumph.

This seller appears to be listing items they do not own. When they get a sale, they appear to find any copy of the book they can locate and get THEIR SELLER to dropship to the buyer, mine came from ThriftBooks and I found the listing, which stated it was in rough condition with no Dust Jacket. THAT IS WHY LISTINGS ARE INACCURATE, they don't appear to even have the book. If this is true, it is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND AGAINST MULTIPLE EBAY POLICIES.

  • A Knockout of a Book

I've been a fan of Teddy Atlas' for years, having enjoyed his commentary on ESPN 2. I could tell he knew a lot about the sport, of course. But I also could see that boxers really respected him. This book explains why. Teddy came up the hard way despite the trappings of a comfortable middle-class life. His dad was a doctor, but Teddy was his own man. This book recounts the many scrapes he got into (including jail time at Rikers), his brief career as a boxer, and the stories behind the boxers he trained. There are many shocking moments here, including the time Teddy held a gun to Mike Tyson's head. (You read that right.) This is a book I'll always keep at hand, and re-read now and again for the sheer inspiration of it.

  • I loved this book

As a boxing fan, I have enjoyed Teddy's analysis on ESPN for some time. Unlike the typical TV personality, all propped up with the right look, the right words, etc., Teddy is obviously just himself. He is a sincere lover of the sport, an expert, and one who likes to share his enthusiasm through explanation. I often see the ring as a metaphor for life, where great passion are character is displayed. Teddy discusses the game from that vantage point, talks about dedication, discipline, personal honesty, manhood. Teddy has become one of my heroes.

  • A great read

I am a huge boxing fan and have always had the utmost respect for Teddy Atlas Jr as both a trainer and color analyst. This book takes the reader on the journey of his life, starting as a tough kid on the streets of New York, through his early days as a trainer underneath the legendary Cus D'amato, and his triumphant heavyweight title victory with Michael Moorer. I cracked it open the day it arrived in the mail, and read it in one sitting. A great book, particularly for boxing enthusiasts.

  • This man pulls no punches. You can see right into his soul.

Great book. A must read even if you are not a in boxing fan. Mr. Atlas is a unique individual with a moral code that is rare.
