A Strange Movie--An Allegory--With a Strange Ending
I liked this movie from the very beginning perhaps because of its star power and lush photography and fantastic music. Actually, "Meet Joe Black" is weird. It starts out with Bill Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) having a heart attack close to his 65th birthday. On a second front, his grown daughter Medical Dr. Susan Parrish (Claire Forlani) is meeting a great new guy with no name (Brad Pitt)in a coffee shop. They have a nice chat, part outside, and he is killed by a passing car. She doesn't know it. The two plots--actually there are three--merge when Bill Parrish continues to have heart attack symptoms and hears weird voices in his head. Finally, the weird voice announces that he is Death and futhermore appears in the body of the mysterious stranger (Brad Pitt). Death ... That means that Joe Black becomes the constant companion of Bill Parrish, who is really a corporate bigwig. Now the third plot: Bill's company is entertaining a merger with Bontecou Enterprises. One of the key players in the merger is Drew (Jake Weber), who is corrupt. He uses the constant appearances of Joe Black to make Bill Parrish look weak and incompetent. He even goes to the extreme of having Bill terminated as chairman of the board. But the merger hasn't happened yet. The second plot continues with Death (I mean Joe Black) falling in love with Dr. Susan. She thinks that Joe is the mysterious stranger, and Death lets her think so. Joe even talks about them going away together. Isn't that weird? This movie lasts 178 minutes, and it actually takes that long to unravel all of this plot. I will say that it has a sort of happy ending. Many critics have panned this movie. But if you give it a chance, it does make sense. Think of Joe Black as a vampire that is courting your grown daughter--and you are the only one who knows the truth. Think how horrified you would be; that is Bill Parrish's dilemma. Trust me in this: this movie is eye candy with great actors doing a super job with lush photography and fantastic music. It is a great ride if you just can enjoy the fantasy and allegory.

It is hard to imagine a worse day than the day that "Death comes calling"! That'a exactly what happened to William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) early one morning. A successful media mogul, Bill is just days shy of his 65th birthday. His corporation is merging with another and this too has him concerned; I guess you can say he's having second thoughts. The same morning, Bill's youngest daughter, Susan (Claire Forlani)stops for a coffee on the way to work. Susan is a resident doctor at a nearby hospital. This morning she met a decent guy who really left an impression on her. All of a sudden, Bill's chest is just killing him. "YES"!! Who is that? Who said that? "YES"!! The pain went away. That night at home, just before dinner, the Housekeeper addresses Mr. Parrish, telling him that there is a ... It is hard to imagine a worse day than the day that "Death comes calling"! It seems that Death has always been so busy that he has never gotten a chance to see life! Bill introduces him as "Joe Black"(Brad Pitt) - after all, couldn't introduce him as Death; who'd stay for dinner? When Susan sees him, she can't believe it; he's the guy that she met that morning. . .or at least that was his body. Joe is so taken with Susan, and actually falls in love with her. This relationship grows, although she doesn't know who he is, other than just a nice guy she met that morning, who apparently is doing business with her father. Susan has a fiancee named Drew, who is Bill's head man, the man pushing the merger, or should I say the swindle of Parrish Communications, Bill's company. As Bill sees Death's interest in Susan growing, he confronts him to leave her alone. Not really being human, Joe, is confused by his feelings for Susan. Bill already knows that he and Death will be leaving in a day or two, following Bill's birthday party, a lavish event being correographed by Bill's older daughter. Death has chosen Bill as his life guide because of the exemplary life that he has lived. Bill appeals to Death's intellect and decency and finally convinces him to not take Susan too. In a bit of a trap, Bill, with Joe's help, exposes Drew as the scoundrel he is. It is now time for Bill and Death to leave. As they walk over the hill, the body that Joe was occupying, is returned to the young man who belonged in it. He is walking back across the hill towards Bill's home. He has no idea what is happening or anything that has happened, since telling Susan good-by that morning at the coffee shop. He sees Susan, but can't imagine what is happening.

Meet Joe Black DVD, you must first suspend disbelief.
Meet Joe Black on DVD , great story, but long 3+ hour movie duration results in some degradation with standard DVD video quality. In the beginning of the movie, you must first suspend your disbelief, if not most logic and reason. Clarification of the nature if the "Death" spiritual being is sadly lacking, and mostly only implied -- understanding of the story is pretty much left up to viewer's imagination & interpretation. I also purchased the Blu Ray version where the video quality is superior to DVD, but encountered a problem trying to obtain 2.1 stereo audio playback. Voices on Blu Ray were nearly inaudible on two-channel stereo speakers, The Blu Ray version appears to only offer 5.1 audio playback - no stereo 2.1 available. What would YOU do if death came knocking?
Plot: A media mogul acts as a guide to Death, who takes the form of a young man to learn about life on Earth and in the process, fall in love with his guide's daughter. I like this film and the actors. It is quite a "chick flick" though. If your a guy you'll really get this statement during the sex scene. (Great movie for a straight date though guys!) The ending was really Hollywood scripting, but I still give the movie 4 stars. Hopkins and Pitt chemistry was super. Excellent Movie
I really bought this movie to hear all of Thomas Newman's amazing music. I expected a good movie with Anthony Hopkins and brad Pitt together. They were great together in Legends of the Fall. I read a review from a guy that is a professional movie critic. He said the movie at 3 hours was long and scenes moved slowly but it gives you very strong insight into the characters and you get to know them well. The movie does not seem like it's 3 hours long. Clair Forlani has the most unique and beautiful eyes on the planet and she is perfect for the part. When I watch movies, I am never a critic. I believe they are real and use the next 2 or 3 hours to wrap it around me like a warm blanket and thoroughly enjoy the ride. This touches the heart for sure. My wife died a few years ago so it ...
