Preview to their future
Something for almost everyone...and willingness to share puts Steve Miller Bands' "Sailor" in a place normally reserved for dying, dead or defunct artists. Yes I'm speaking of the "Greatest hits of.." category. However; in this case a band with their greatest hits still in front of them, weird huh. In all fairness I've got to admit as varied as these tracks are the album still comes off with strength of lyric and drive that can make even the deadest and drowsiest of us want to pump up the volume. Written by the varied talents of the band the combo of tastes can jolt from one track to the next, Quicksilver girl to Lucky Man or Living in the U.S.A to Quicksilver Girl. Still there is cohesiveness in all this as well, you just have to take it all in with ... Nice to look back and see where they came from and still enjoy it all. In the time between theme albums and sock hop bop the albums which inspired b-sides are now sorely missed.

Sailor - Steve Miller Band (Rock) CD 1996
Sailor - Steve Miller Band, (Rock) (CD 1990 & 1996) Original album release late 1968. Second album by the Steve Miller Band. The commercial hit off this album is "Living In The USA". I personally prefer this album version to the later compilation version, which cuts off the drag race commentators line at the end of the song. The truncated version just leaves me feeling that the song wasn't finished, as the longer version with the drag race commentator was what I was used to from original airplay and subsequent recent airplay on classic radio stations. The social commentary in Miller's lyrics is not as prevalent as it was in his first album, although some argue that "Living In The USA" is more parody than affirmation of the lifestyle of ... The original compositions are more rock and roll based with some love ballads included. Also, the experimental sound of the psychedelic era is not as pronounced on this album as it was in "Children Of The Future", but is still present in some compositions. This album is a combination of original compositions by band members and covers of old blues standards. In addition to the composition by Miller, the hit "Living In The USA", Boz Skaggs has several songs which he wrote or co-wrote. My favorite Skaggs composition is "Dime-A-Dance Romance", which is a precursor to the songs that come later in Skaggs solo career. Of the covers, the most notable is Miller's cover of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Gangster Of Love". For the unabashed Steve Miller fan, this album is worth getting on CD. Also, it would be a great addition to any collection of late '60's rock.

My favorite Steve Miller album. Had to have it on CD. Great music. I listen to it on my way to work and when I sit out by my fire place at night.
