YOUNG ADAM is David McKenzie's adaptation of Scottish Beat writer Alexander Trocchi's cult novel, a romantic murder mystery set on a barge in the canals of Scotland. Lovely photography by Giles Nuttgens, complemented by a lonely score by David Byrne, provides a picturesque backdrop for what is otherwise a seedy story of morality gone far astray and hopelessness taking hold of everyday life, with sex as the only outlet. Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton both lend excellent performances to the film, acting out a strained relationship of carnal misgiving that is their mutual respite.Working on a barge that travels to ports between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Joe (McGregor) is a randy ol' chap. He befriends Les (Peter Mullen) as they labor hard days shoveling coal and pass their evenings over pints and darts in the local pubs. But Joe is simply positioning himself to seduce Les' wife, Ella (Swinton), who he easily and frequently beds. A steamy affair with a heavy dose of on-screen coitus eventually leads to trouble for all three. A subplot concerns Joe's past romance with a girl (Emily Mortimer) whose mysterious death is reported in local papers, with flashbacks to raunchy sexual interludes representing his fondest memories of her.This movie screened in October 2003 as part of the 41st New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

In Glasgow, Scotland a young adult drifter, Joe Taylor (Ewan McGregor), finds work on the barge owned by Ella Gault (Tilda Swinton). Her husband Les Gault (Peter Mullan), is older, a drunkard, but the father of their son, Jimmy Gault (Jack McElhone). The Gault's marriage leaves much to be desired, for Ella especially. In between transporting coal & other cargo on the River Clyde, Joe & Les are loading the hold with coal, when Joe spots a young woman's body floating face down. Since they fished her out of the water, Les curiously follows the newspaper reports about her: he's rather proud to have been involved in finding her body. Joe's a busy stud of a guy, either having sex with just about any woman who attracts him or reading books on the barge. His sexual appetite & Ella's utter ... When the police arrest a suspect of the murdered woman, Joe becomes interested in the case. His memories, revealed to viewers as flash backs, disclose the truth about the death of the woman. It is a suspense noir based upon the novel by Alexander Trochhi, a Scottish Beat poet. David Mackenzie directed the motion picture & co-wrote the screen play with Trochhi. The movie was released in the Netherlands on 4 September 2003. Rated NC-17 for some (very) explicit sexual content, including full frontal nudity of McGregor & graphic depictions of sex acts between adults. It runs 98 mins. Language is English. It's in color with an aspect ratio of 2.35x1. The sound mix is dolby digital. The picture was primarily filmed on location in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, UK.

Great character study
Love this movie, a great character study, delves into the lives of the characters and how they handle love, truth and betrayal. One of Ewan Mcgregor's best performances.

Just Sex
This movie has a very sexy young Ewan McGregor who plays and preys on women and they do not play too hard to get.Fasinating story of a man who drifts through life just enjoying any woman he comes in contact with just a drifter and the sad consequences.Strictly adults only.
