Agnieszka Holland directs this reflective, moving drama, which was based on the novel by Richard Vetere, who also adapted the screenplay with John Romano. THE THIRD MIRACLE tells the story of Frank Shore (Ed Harris), a priest currently undergoing a crisis of faith. Investigating a deceased woman upon whom he has the ability to bestow sainthood, he begins to fall for the woman's agnostic daughter, Roxanne (Anne Heche), confusing his purpose even more. Seeing his only chance for redemption in canonizing the woman, he must dig deep within himself to convince the cynical Archbishop Werner (Armin Mueller-Stahl) that she is, in fact, worthy of sainthood.Holland's film bears a tone of naive revelation when compared to the satirical, faith-free attitudes of most late-20th century films; it is this sincere approach to her story that makes THE THIRD MIRACLE such a fresh work of cinema. As the confused, but well-intentioned Frank Shore, Ed Harris delivers a fiery, engaging performance that proves his overflowing talent as an actor, giving the picture the heart that it needs, preventing it from slipping into overt sentimentality.

The Third Miracle
The Third Miracle is an excellent movie, particularly for people who have no idea how a Saint becomes a Saint in the Catholic Church. Dialogue and clips can easily be used in a teaching setting of various sorts. Although the movie is somewhat older now, it remains valuable, and good drama. The ending has a significant twist if you don't catch a small detail when the movie starts. The depiction of the priest's struggle with his life, faith, vocation and even sexual tension with "the girl" in the movie was bold, and honest. Ed Harris was brilliant in this hardly-heard-of-film doing great justice to the life a of a priest...as an actor! I also found it interesting that the Bishop in the movie was portrayed as materialistic and very business-minded....definitely some liberty taken there, ... One scene where the priest and the daughter of the potential Saint embrace, and kiss intimately will be uncomfortable for people. The priest is also a drinker, very common. While some details are uncomfortable, it's real...and probably more like it must be for those priests who face challenges and temptations in the midst of their work and ministries. I love this movie because anyone can learn something about Saints, the Catholic Church and themselves when it's watched. Ultimately it begs the question, "What do you believe?" and "Why?"

what makes someone a saint in the church
As a devout Christian who believes God works miracles thru special people I loved this movie. It tells the story of a lapsed priest who has serious doubts about God called by his monsignor to investigate the case of woman who is being petitioned by her parish priest for sainthood. The priest undertakes a in depth study of the woman's life and the miracles attributed to her. It is during the course of his investigation that he regains his faith in God and sees that God doesn't waste miracles even though one of his recipients is a young drug user. The movie does a very good job exploring one's struggle of faith even though that person is a priest and showing what the church requires before someone can be canonized.As a devout Christian who believes God works miracles thru special people I loved this movie. A Little Girl, A German Soldier, A Priest
I had to watch this twice and read reviews before I realized the meaning of the three miracles. A wonderful character driven film with a beginning zeroing in on a village, a little girl, her father, a priest and a wounded German soldier. Of course Ed Harris is in his prime, an astounding performance by Anne Heche and all other actors superb. A disillusioned priest who tastes the blood of a statue shredding the blood and the incredible meaning of this. The ending music is so lovely, just lovely. I bought the soundtrack to the movie (rather hard to find now) as I felt it was so lovely. I had to watch this twice and read reviews before I realized the meaning of the three miracles.
