THE HINDENBURG (DVD, 1998)
Suspenseful adaptation of the mystery surrounding the 1937 disaster in which the German airship HINDENBURG crashed while landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The story line suggests that the blimp was bombed out of the sky. Conventional wisdom suggests something totally different. German intelligence officer, Colonel Ritter (George C. Scott)is along to make sure nothing happens, but at 885'long, there are too many places to hide a device, and this airship is filled with fifteen million cubic feet of explosive Hydrogen. The movie is a close examination of the passengers and crew and their politics. Who's the one? Who has a grudge, an axe to grind with Hitler? Who wants to see the most visible symbol of Nazi Germany crash in flames? It seems that Col. Ritter has his hands full. As the ... As the history books will tell, the official reason for the crash was either pilot error that led to structural damage, or act of God. This was an enjoyable movie with the airship footage. The great airships were an extremely comfortable way to travel. This was the only German passenger airship to crash, and while sabotage cannot be 100% ruled out, it is highly unlikely that the Hindenburg was bombed.

Great special effects, brilliant ending, draggy middle.
Although THE HINDENBURG was released in 1975, I can't fault the special effects, and the ending was absolutely brilliant. The only problem is a draggy middle. If you're going to make a disaster movie where the actual disaster takes about 5 minutes (unlike the Titanic, which took 3 hours to sink), you can't show a lot of heroism and human drama during the actual disaster; there isn't enough time for anyone to do much except jump out and run, or burst into flames. So the challenge is to create fictional characters and add them to the real-life drama, so that the audience knows and cares about them and has a vested interest in seeing who lives and who dies, even though you know going into it that the airship itself will crash. THE HINDENBURG's cast didn't quite ... Although THE HINDENBURG was released in 1975, I can't fault the special effects, and the ending was absolutely brilliant. The only problem is a draggy middle. THE HINDENBURG's cast didn't quite succeed in capturing my interest. The focus was mostly on George C. Scott as a German military man; he didn't show much emotion. Anne Bancroft, on her way to visit her deaf daughter, should have tugged at the viewer's heartstrings; but her persona was similarly distant and aloof. Robert Clary, as a comedian who made fun of Hitler, was interesting, but somewhat silly and annoying. THE HINDENBURG movie should have ended in heartbreak when many of your friends die horribly; instead it ended with a bunch of people dying --- but it wasn't so bad, because you didn't feel personally close to them. I still recommend this film, but a remake with more interesting characters would be stellar.

Historically correct or not, it's a film worth seeing
This 1975 film is a compendium of the facts and fiction of the events leading up to the disaster. For dramatic effect, Sabotage was chosen as the cause, rather than electricity lashing out at a couple of tons of hydrogen. The story of the last voyage of the airship Hindenburg in 1937 from Germany to Lakehurst, New York. The film is presented from the various viewpoints of aircrew and passengers, fictionising real passengers for plot purposes and expolring a conspiracy theory as to what caused the disaster whilst setting the events in a historical context. The film incorporates the iconic newsreel coverage of the actual disaster. George C. Scott plays a German air security official fresh from fighting in the Spanish Civil War to break a possible plot in blowing up the Hindenburg. Directed ... Historically correct or not, it's a film worth seeing but don't expect a disaster film comparable to THE TOWERING INFERNO or TITANIC.

The Hindenburg dvd
The Hindenburg dvd is hollywood drama of the tragic saga of the aircraft. Hollywood is tops for drama,actors, adventure, emphasis. However, the Dvd has low-volume on voice...more difficult as star George c Scott is 2nd to Brando in mumbling as with a mouth-full of marbles. An unpopular achievement of the German aircraft was the various zeppelins that transported passengers to America, and hollywood did an excellent job of dramatization of the effects, and most of all the enactment of a bomb-plot by a resistance [ to Third reich ] by the leftists who are connected to the war in Spain. I like this story for the scenery, and story of interest. Caveat : As stated before, the voice level on my dvd was low, and even when TV-volume control was full-100%, GC Scott is hard to ...
