À propos de ce produit

Product Information

With their renowned squadron leader Greg "Pappy" Boyington, Marine Fighting Squadron (VMF) 214 was one of the best-known and most colorful combat units of World War II. The popular television series Baa Baa Black Sheep added to their legend--while obscuring the truly remarkable combat record of the Black Sheep and Boyington. A retired naval flight officer and former historian for the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Bruce Gamble provides a highly readable account that serves to both correct and extend the record of this premier fighting force.

Avis les plus pertinents

  • Excellent History of VMF-214 during WWII

Like other books by Bruce Gamble, this book is well-researched and well-written. He traces the three very different iterations of VMF-214 during WWII - only one of which did Gregory "Pappy" Boyington command. He also exposes in detail Boyington's false claims of aerial victories, both while serving with the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) in Burma and China and on January 3, 1944, the day he was shot down and captured by the Japanese. As a result, he generously credits Boyington with 23 victories - putting him behind Joe Foss(26) and Robert Hanson (25), as only the third highest-scoring Marine ace of WWII. For someone who wants to learn the TRUE story of VMF-214, this is the book to read.

  • Complete, well-researched history of World War II's famous U.S. Marine Corps VMF-214 fighter squadron, aka the "Black Sheep" squadron.

Bruce Gamble's comprehensive and detailed chronicle of the World War II U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadron VMF-214, most popularly known as the "Black Sheep" squadron, and commanded during their most successful combat tours by their famous leader, Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, is a great addition to World War II history. Highly recommended for anyone interested in WWII, Marine Corps aviation, and U.S. fighter aircraft history.
