Synopsis
A grand master of the form, Rex Stout is one of America's greatest mystery writers, and his literary creation Nero Wolfe is one of fiction's greatest detectives. Here, in Stout's first two complete Wolfe mysteries, the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth and his trusty man-about-town Archie Goodwin solve their most baffling cases. Fer-de-lance The fer-de-lance is among the most deadly snakes known to man. When someone makes a present of one to Nero Wolfe, his partner, Archie Goodwin, suspects it means Wolfe is getting close to solving the devilishly clever murders of an immigrant and a college president. But this is a case with more twists than an angry rattler...and if Wolfe doesn't handle it with extreme care, he'll be the next one struck by a killer with poison in his heart. The League of Frightened Men Paul Chapin's Harvard cronies never forgave themselves for the hazing prank that left their friend a cripple. Yet they believed that Paul himself had forgiven them--until a class reunion ends in death and a series of poems promising more of the same. Now this league of frightened men is desperate for Nero Wolfe's help. But can even the great detective outwit a killer smart enough to commit an unseen murder...in plain sight?, A grand master of the form, Rex Stout is one of America's greatest mystery writers, and his literary creation Nero Wolfe is one of fiction's greatest detectives. Avis les plus pertinents

  • The first couple of Nero Wolfe mysteries in one convenient volume!

There's nothing quite like Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe novels (and stories). Brain teasers with wit...but more than that, all great personality studies. I'd been gushing to a friend who'd never read any-- shocking in an American woman in her late 60s!-- and bought a copy on eBay to send her way. She is now an addict. Anyone who likes a combination of murder, character, wisecracks and NYC in the 30s (ultimately extending into the 70s) will enjoy these. And btw-- I came to Rex Stout via my love of PG Wodehouse-- Rex and Plum were admirers of each other's writing!

  • 1st Two Titles of a Great Series

What can one say? Here are the first two titles that started the great Nero Wolfe series of books. The series is really about Nero's sidekick, Archie Goodwin. Archie is Nero's "Watson"; as in Sherlock Holmes. The stories are told through and interpreted by Archie and are thus flavored with Archie's appealing character. Already in his forties when he wrote the first novel, Rex Stout was a great fan of Sherlock Holmes and a member of the Baker Street Irregulars society of Sherlock fans. The Nero stories are Rex's original take on the detective formula introduced by Arthur Conan Doyle.

  • Always a good read!

I love all of Rex Stout's books. I'm always happy to read another one, bonus to get a two in one!

  • Childhood favorite replacement

Read these first when I was about 12 - the originals finally fell to pieces, so I am thrilled to find them both in one book.
