Goofy But Fun Astaire-Rogers Musical
In Roberta (1935), Ginger Rogers plays an American girl posing as European royalty, and Fred Astaire plays an American band leader. The primary plot, though, has to do with Randolph Scott inheriting a French fashion company where Irene Dunne works as a designer. The story is convoluted, silly, and full of twists, but the dance numbers are top-rate. Astaire and Rogers show off their great talent and are fun in every scene together. If you haven't seen Astaire-Rogers pictures before, you should probably start with Top Hat or The Gay Divorcee, which are better and more representative of Fred and Ginger's good films. This was quite a delight.
This video from 1935 was for my Mother in law and she was thrilled with a flash from her teenage years. The extras were as much fun as the feature film. While I wasn't even a twinkle in my Dad's eye in 1935, I still enjoyed such an interesting view of the wealthy culture in Hollywood from that era in the "Lido" extra. And the film itself done in Paris, well holy cow what a show. I am looking into some others from that period for her as a Mother's Day gift since Astaire and Rogers did quite a few films.
