Give Me a Whiskey With a Ginger Ale On the Side
Greta Garbo had been a movie star long before talkies were made popular. But she succumbed in this 1930 movie--the first for her to speak in. Her first words 16 minutes into the movie are: "Give me a whiskey with a ginger ale on the side. And don't be selfish!" In this play by Eugene O'Neill, Anna Christie (Garbo) has traveled from St. Paul to New York City to see her father who goes by Chris (George Marion). He is a coal barge captain who drinks excessively with a house frau Marthy (brilliantly played by Marie Dressler in a low class way). Her father hasn't seen her since she was 5 years old. Her mother had died a long time ago in Minnesota and had left Anna to be raised by her aunt and uncle. They treated her like Cinderella, and she finally escaped to become a ... Before Chris meets Anna, she confesses all to Marthy in a bar. But Chris does not find out until later about Anna's past. In fact, Anna hides her past while she becomes acquainted with her father and while she is dating a wandering sailor, Matt (Charles Bickford). When the truth finally is spilled by Marthy, the movie heats up. There are two versions of this DVD--one on each side. The one that I watched is in English. But Garbo actually preferred the one on the other side which is made in German; she played the part with an entirely different cast. Both sides have English subtitles.

Garbo’s first talky film
Being a huge fan of the golden age films I have watched lots and I own all my favorite ones up to date, this is definitely a keeper which means I don’t collect what I don’t plan to watch many times I love the story I love the rawness of the lines and the actors in their giving them, it’s a primitive stage setting as most were back then but the actors hold your eyes and heart throughout and you hold the words and meaning of them when not distracted by background flash there are lessons to be learned in these old movies, the yearling, cowboys, dinner at eight, Stella, so many I could list. Anna Christie
Garbo is excellent in her first speaking role. The story is deep and sad, drawing sympathy for Garbo's character, Anna, that escalates into a heart wrenching climax. A must see for Greta Garbo fans. The German version is clearer in regards to the risque aspects of the story. An excellent film.

ANNA CHRISTIE
a dated , but still interesting film which served as Garbo's talking debut. Also featured is the German version of the film which Garbo herself referred to as the better of the two films. Since the censors there were much more liberal, it was able to be a bit more explicit.
