Product Information

Set in Romania during a time of great social turmoil, this gritty political drama stars Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson as a newlywed couple entering the country for the first time. Branagh plays Guy, a hopeless optimist who is easily swayed in his views. When he starts hanging out with British members of the Secret Service, he becomes embroiled in some death-defying schemes that irretrievably alter his life. His wife, Harriett (Thompson) is none too pleased at these events, and their marriage hits the rocks as the daredevil tendencies of Guy upset the equilibrium in their relationship. Based on a true story, FORTUNES OF WAR is a fascinating glimpse into lives torn apart by the changing social fortunes of a country in turmoil.

Marriage TESTED in early World War 2 ~ 4 STAR~ VG
PLOT: Newly married British couple are trapped in the balkans at the start of World War 2~ VERY good worth watching once~ Kenneth Branagh is GUY Pringle~ a professor teaching in the Balkans that returns with his new Bride~ Harriet (Emma Thompson) ~ Guy is a very likeable man who&apos;s main objective is his own daily plans~ he never allows his wife to interfear in his plans~ very in love this couple start their married life in Romania as Poland is being bombed~ so the BRITS are at war with the GERMANS~ believing they are safe they stay in NEUTRAL Romania~ they hide a JEW (SASHA)as the slow move from neutral country to facism.GUY is surrounded by British Spies who use the COVER of newspaper reporters to remain in Romania~ ADDED fun is Prince Yakimov (Ronald Pickup) is one of the ... Surrounded by colorful characters and very good locals this is a very good movie~ the week spot is the Pringle Marriage~ GUY (BRANAGH) is very shallow~ and SELFISH man who sees Harriet as someone to love him~ but he is busy reading a BOOK most of the movie. Harriet (Thompson) is very lonely and finds friendship with other characters in the movie. LOVELY locals, very good story~ EXCELLENT acting by everyone, on the humorous side~ HARRIET and GUY live out of ONE suitcase each& but never seem to wear the same outfit more than once and are immaculate in every scene~ LOL~ I GIVE IT 4 FOUR STARS~ the scene stealer here is Prince Yakimov~ Ronald Pickup~ who was so colorful HE deserved his own story. Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh married 2 years after this movie was made.

A great mini-series, a true hidden diamond
I have loved this film for 10 years and up until fairly recently was not available on DVD. This film brings you places and brings out an emotional outcry for the characters. The film immediately pulls you in and a few hours later, it's over and what a journey I have taken with this cast of characters. The people are 3 dimensional and easily to identify with, flaws and all. Emma Thompson's first movie role will move you and see the actress that she came from. A multitude of British stars and a truly wonderful film. You will also enjoy itI have loved this film for 10 years and up until fairly recently was not available on DVD. Interesting look at Eastern Europe at beginning of WWII.
Not up to current BBC mini-series production values. Interesting look at the British ex-pat community in the face of WWII.

Fortunes of War - an accurate film adaptation of the two trilogies. Thompson and Branagh are exceptional.
This is a 1987 adaptation of two trilogies, and manages to cover a wide range of characters and locations and incidents.
