LA PUNK TALE MORE LIKE REAL LIFE
Suburbia is a tale of a group of punk kids in the 80's who come from broken homes and form the bonds to create a family. All the kids are so different in their own ways, but they have a common tie - abusive homes, absent parents, nowhere to go. These kids form a group called TR as in "the rejected" and end up living in houses that were condemned. They try to find creative ways to keep the family together such as conducting garage raids to get food. These punks, though hard, are good at heart. However, a "watch group" formed from some of the suburban areas picks on the kids and are very mean - in one instance they go on a "hunt" for some wild neighborhood dogs and execute them which is pretty grotesque and inhumane. There is one girl, Sheila, whose haunted past gets the best of her. ... Suburbia is a tale of a group of punk kids in the 80's who come from broken homes and form the bonds to create a family. There is one girl, Sheila, whose haunted past gets the best of her. Alot of this movie hinges on great music. You get to see some punk performances that are really cool. The parallel here is that the wild dogs that were abandoned to roam the neighborhoods by their owners after losing jobs (they mention auto workers) are similar to the abandoned kids. These punks aren't really like what you would see in Sid and Nancy for example - most of them oppose drugs and are more interested in making society look like the idiot by coming up with ways to poke fun at it. You start to feel kind of bad for these kids because they all seem like they have this abundance of potential but they all have been "kicked in the teeth" so to speak through no fault of their own. As the movie progresses, you get a feeling of emptiness and stagnation - like they will never evolve. You wonder if they will end up 60 years old still doing the same old thing. My surprise was that the cops in this movie weren't really down on the kids as much as everyone else was. They seemed to take them with a sense that they weren't really hurting anyone. Ironically, it is the great "citizens" that end up really doing the evil work. I've seen movies like SLC Punk, and I tend to believe that the kids in Suburbia were a bit more believable. I think the circumstances were also more believable. This was pretty good, but sometimes it got a little slow with not much more to expect. All in all Suburbia is not like a fun, self-centered, silly romp through the punk generation. Therefore, there isn't alot of goofy one-liners. It's just like a normal family with abnormal circumstances trying to get along.

I bought it mostly for memories cause I saw it when I was a young kid & a few more times in my high school years. Back then it was just something to watch while drinking beer & rockin out. I can sum it up in 1 word REAL. No cheesy Holly Wood effects. I mean, at the beginning when the little kid gets shredded by a wild dog it's horrific in a funny kinda way. You just don't see that kinda shit in movies anymore. You should see the look on peoples faces during that seen. Their jaw drops in awe while saying Oh my this & holly that. They really start to focus on the movie then. And living in those abandon houses, thats real shit. suburbia the essential 80's punk movie

****PUNKROCK****
This is one of the most amazing and engaging films ever!!! I bought it because of the connection I felt with the characters and of course the music! I will tell you this movie will leave you feeling (no spoilers not giving even a hint) some serious emotions.

Life is tough, Suburbia is a movie of the struggles of youth in the 1980s.
I guess this is what it means to be a Punk. I was blessed to watch this when I was just learning about punk rock music. I loved the clothes, the attitude of these kids and the idea of family and home is where you make it. Not one of those polished wanna be punk rock movies..this is as raw as it gets. Some old footage of some American punk rock bands...I think it is boss. A for sure movie for any kid wanting to watch a good true blue American made Punk Rock movie.I guess this is what it means to be a Punk.
