    Grendel, by John Gardner

    This short novel is based on the epic Old-English poem Beowulf, but is NOT some dry academic exercise you should undertake thinking it's good for you. I first read it 30 years ago in college, and still re-read it every few years. Gardner's version of the story is narrated by Grendel, the monster that Beowulf arrives to fight, and is nothing like the original poem in its tone. This time the hero tale is laced with modernist themes, and Grendel is the quintessential outsider who exposes the darker aspects of human nature. Beautifully written. Gardner died in a motorcycle accident in the early 70s and was truly underrated. His portraits of Grendel, and the warrior thanes and their king Hrothgar are vivid and really compelling; the dragon is a masterpiece in character creation. Well ...

    GRENDEL BY JOHN GARNER

    This book is a pretty good re-telling of the Beowulf story. It is much like the "Three Little Pigs" told from the wolf's point of view. In this story Grendel (the monster) tells us his side of things. The book is very recent (1970's). It is easy to read and interesting. I used it in my English class for a unit on Arthurian Legend. It worked well.

    bought this book because the author is related distantly haven't had time to read the book yet so this review thing is sort of a waste of time, isn't it? but there doesn't seem to be any other way to get rid of review thing.
