This cookbook has it all! Simple, delicious, healthy, common recipes!
My mother bought this cookbook for me when I got married in 1988. Over the years I have used it countless times. The recipes are simple and the food always turns out delicious. Anything I want to cook, I just go to the recipe index. This is the perfect cookbook for the beginner. It has pages that tell you how long you can store food in the freezer, pictures of what each type of meat looks like and the different ways it can be cooked. It has meal suggestions for every holiday and events. The things I like most about it is that the ingredients are simple things that I already have in my pantry and spice rack. I don't have to go spend $5.00 on a spice that I will only use 1/4 teaspoon and then never use it again. The other thing I like is that it has EVERYTHING! Anything I want, it ... The first week, she had already used it twice, crepes and zucchini bread. It is healthier to cook you own food rather than pre-packaged. So if you want simple day-to-day cooking, this it the book for you. If you want a fancy gourmet cookbook, this is not the book for you.

Don't let the word "Southern" in the title fool you; the dishes in this cookbook are all those crowd pleasers on which cooks all over have relied for many years. My Favorite Cookbook for Everyday Cooking!
I bought this cookbook when I was teaching French in a small high school in Maryland. A book dealer set up a display in the teacher's lounge and I bought this book among others. It was a decision I've never regretted. I've since given away the other two cookbooks I purchased at the same time but this one will have a place in my kitchen as long as I am cooking! I'd been married only two years when I bought it and several of our family favorites through the years have come from the Southern Living Cookbook. I've used this cookbook so much that I am now shopping for a replacement. The recipes in the book are easy to follow and generally use ingredients that are found in most grocery stores. Instructions are well-written. Supplementary materials include menus for large groups or ... I bought this cookbook when I was teaching French in a small high school in Maryland. Instructions are well-written. Supplementary materials include menus for large groups or special occasions, an intro to cake decorating, napkin folding, emergency substitutions and more. I am putting hope chests together for my three daughters and will be including a copy of this cookbook before any other, with their favorite recipes noted for quick reference. The only shortcoming I've found with this book is that the binding is inferior. A cookbook needs a substantial binding designed to hold up to years of frequent use. This binding does not satisfy that requirement, thus my search for a replacement. It is still intact after 18 years, but weak and starting to split at the spine. My copy did not come with a dust jacket and I've discovered there is an edition that does. Perhaps that edition has a more substantial binding.

A must-have cookbook
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift 20 years ago and still use it every week! In fact, I just purchased another for my daughter's hope chest. So many recipes have become family favorites. Recipes included range from simple appetizers to elegant main courses and are "from scratch", using common ingredients. Directions are easy to follow, some step-by-step with pictures. Charts for proper meat preparation and selection, food preservation (including canning, freezing and dehydrating), ingredient substitutions and equipment care are clear and unbelievably helpful, especially for the new cook. While this cookbook does include many southern specialties, it is a must-have for all cooks of all regions.I received this cookbook as a wedding gift 20 years ago and still use it every week! Awesome cookbook! One I am proud to give as gift & use on a regular basis.
I have used this cook book for MANY recipes over the past almost thirty year. As a result, I needed to purchase a second for my son so my daughter can have my copy down the road. There are very basic kitchen ideas as well as more in-depth information and detailed instructions for cutting meat, how too instructions for canning from beginning to end etc. I used the instructional pictorial for teaching my 9yr old daughter how to make pie crust for Thanksgiving this year. There are very handy substitutions and measurement tables. I have used many times over the years. I would recomend every mother to get this for their children who are setting up housekeeping.
