Product Information

One of The Atlantic's Great American Novels A realistic and emotional novel about a woman battling mental illness and societal pressures written by the iconic American writer Sylvia Plath. "It is this perfectly wrought prose and the freshness of Plath's voice in The Bell Jar that make this book enduring in its appeal." -- USA Today The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: young, brilliant, beautiful, and enormously talented, but slowly going under--maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's neurosis becomes completely understandable and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such thorough exploration of the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche - and the profound collective loneliness that modern society has yet to find a solution for - is an extraordinary accomplishment, and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic. This P.S. edition features extra insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Reviews
Esther Greenwood's account of her years in the bell jar is as clear and readable as it is witty and disturbing. . . . [This] is not a potboiler, nor a series of ungrateful caricatures: it is literature., The narrator simply describes herself as feeling very still and very empty, the way the eye of a tornado must feel. The in-between moment is just what Miss Plath's poetry does catch brilliantly--the moment poised on the edge of chaos., The first-person narrative fixes us there, in the doctor's office, in the asylum, in the madness, with no reassuring vacations when we can keep company with the sane and listen to their lectures., It is this perfectly wrought prose and the freshness of Plath's voice in The Bell Jar that make this book enduring in its appeal and make it as meaningful . . . as it was 25 years ago., "It is this perfectly wrought prose and the freshness of Plath's voice in The Bell Jar that make this book enduring in its appeal and make it as meaningful . . . as it was 25 years ago." -- USA Today "Esther Greenwood's account of her years in the bell jar is as clear and readable as it is witty and disturbing. . . . • I didn't get the point

It turned out to be "something to read". I don't know why I expected it to be more interesting but it's better than some books in that I was at least able to finish it. I just didn't get the point of the book but that could just be me -- others might really like it.

  • the most striking, haunting book i've ever read.

It's hard to not be obsessed by this book. It's alot of psychology...thinly veiled autobiography. the honesty is what got me. It's hard to admit that you have psychological disorders...let alone write, in detail about trying to kill yourself and your obsessions. THe main character, Esther, is a great medium to learn about Plath. Her writing is impeccable and when I first read it, I wished she had lived to write more prose. It's a beautiful and stunning piece of work. Just as pleasing to hear and read as her poetry. If you like emotional work, if you can handle raw hate and despair, you need to read this. It changed my writing style. If you're a writer, you REALLY need to read this.

  • good

some pages were horribly folded, the cover was ripped which made it look hideous. other than that, everything is fine. came fast, thank you! just hoping it’s not missing any pages but i’m super excited to read!

  • ~Great book! hard not to lose your mind reading it

I liked the book because it is very real and enjoyable to read about her life. As the story goes on and as she very unobviously begins to lose her good mind, it grows a lingering sense of sadistic unempathetic rage of mental deterioration. Must read with an open mind to appreciate
