Publisher Konami, in collaboration with Zombie Studios, brings the world of the Saw movies to the PS3 with “Saw” the video game. Played in third-person perspective, "Saw" falls under the horror survival genre for video games. Gamers play as Detective Tapp, the injured detective who survives Jigsaw’s puzzles in the first movie. The timeline falls between the first and second "Saw" movies with the video game providing its own storyline independent from the movie, but also using bits and pieces from the first "Saw." Tapp awakens in an insane asylum rigged with Jigsaw’s puzzles and traps, including rigged doors and minions that want to kill Tapp to remove the key hidden in his chest and free themselves from the torture Jigsaw puts them through in the game. Detective Tapp must search the asylum in an effort to find and rescue other Jigsaw victims while, at the same time, use combat techniques to fight off attackers who have orders to kill Tapp. Soon, Tapp learns that the victims he’s saving are people who have a past or current connection with him. Will Tapp save these victims or is the connection one of hatred that leads Tapp to abandon the victims? Some are fighting to free themselves from Jigsaw’s traps, while others actually sought out Jigsaw in an effort to attempt his torturous puzzle game. The game provides a variety of weapons that Tapp uses to kill Jigsaw’s minions including pipes, electrified puddles, and mop handles. Players must solve the provided puzzle before advancing in the game, which is made apparent when Jigsaw seals the door behind Tapp to prevent him from leaving the room before he finishes the puzzle. Combat is a part of the game, but it’s not the main focus. "Saw" focuses on the puzzles and victim traps rather than fighting, causing players to use mental strategies rather than physical combat strategies. Included throughout the game are mini games designed to help Tapp move through the video game by providing a means for improved health and game advancement. "Saw" for Playstation 3 makes the player’s choices an important part of the game. Characters live or die based on the choices the player makes during gameplay, and answers needed to help move through the game or to search for weapons are based largely on choices made by the player. "Saw" ends when the player must choose between freedom or truth. Freedom lets Jigsaw and Tapp escape, with the haunting memories of the asylum leading Tapp to eventually kill himself. Truth leads the player on a final search for Jigsaw and ends with Tapp as a patient in an actual asylum where he believes he is still trying to find and kill Jigsaw. "Saw" attempts to answer questions players may have about characters from the first movie and reveal why Jigsaw is a serial killer who forces people to complete puzzles for survival. Gamers who have always wanted Jigsaw to ask them, “Would you like to play a game?” will find that "Saw" for PS3 opens to the door to experiencing the Saw movies as the main protagonist.

Good game for the horror buffs out there
As far as PS3 games go, SAW is certainly an interesting one. It looks good for its time, and the gameplay definitely does a good job of making you feel trapped and powerless. It seems to be subject to a couple glitches here and there: button prompts not working, clipping into doors, that sort of thing. It's nothing that prevents you from playing and enjoying the game. The game is especially recommended to fans of the SAW franchise, as it features a couple characters and traps from the films. Fair warning: though the game is pretty good, its being out-of-print on an old "retro" console has brought up its price a fair amount. Great Classic.
I played SAW 2: Flesh & Blood before this one and I have to say, this one is probably a lot better and more compelling. The story made me wanna keep playing. However the combat was kinda clunky and not my favorite part. Overall amazing classic game. Worth a try. 👌

Hollywood films continue to skew towards what critics disgustedly refer to as "torture porn," a type of movie most recently popularized by the Saw franchise. These movies are meant to shock the viewer through mutilation and graphic depictions of death and pain. Meanwhile, horror videogames have turned into shoot'em-ups with far flung sci-fi settings (Dead Space) and muscle-bound, invincible protagonists (Resident Evil). Saw partially succeeds in bringing a taste of Hollywood horror to your console by grounding itself in the gritty and depraved world of the popular film series. Saw breaks out of the gates hard, introducing us to the protagonist Detective Tapp as he regains consciousness and ... A metallic helmet has been affixed to his head that will bisect his cranium if players don't quickly press the corresponding buttons that flash on the sides of the device. The puzzle isn't complicated, but from the outset the presentation strikes the right chord by giving us a high tension, nerve-racking experience. Detective Tapp soon realizes that he is one of many people trapped in an insane asylum and has become a pawn in the deranged plans of a serial killer. His captor is the man he has spent his life pursuing, a brilliant psychopath labeled "Jigsaw" by the press. His claim to infamy is that he's never "killed" anyone, he simply presents them with a choice of actions. Unfortunately for his victims, the decision making process involves self-mutilation, suicide, or murder. They also involve brain teasers and puzzles that require players to act quickly under pressure. Considering Jigsaw often asks his victims if they'd "like to play a game" it's pretty amazing we haven't seen an interactive version of his exploits until now. Without spoiling anything, I can say that the plot and progression of Saw the videogame is something of a "greatest hits" montage from the film series. Fans will find the scenarios, characters, and violent set pieces extremely familiar. You'll get everything from barrels of pig guts, to limb twisting, to improvised surgery. None of the gross-outs are as gut-wrenchingly realistic as the film, but the graphics have just enough kick to induce queasiness. In this way game puts the best ideas from the franchise to use. Unfortunately the films only provide enough material for a few hours of interactive horror before the formula starts to repeat itself.

Fun game, lots of puzzles, good game to rent.
I have been a fan of the Saw movies since they came out. That being said, I have yet to see Saw VI, because my girlfriend has yet to see any of them (crazy I know!). I dont want to have to explain it all then get confused myself.. anyways. I dont know if the game is linked to the newest movie, but I didnt see many references to any other Saw movie. The game box says there are some answers to the movie, so I assume it is about Saw VI. This is a very fun game if you are a fan of the puzzles and the films. The puzzles do get pretty repetetive, but still good. There are alot of circuit-completing and pipe matching puzzles. There are also mini puzzles for each door lock you pick and weapon crates have a gear puzzle to complete. All in all, pretty good. The combat system is pretty bad. ... The best way to go about it, is to anticipate and strike early. If your opponent gets the first hit, you wont be able to recover and hit back unless you move and restart. There are a ton of weapons you can use, including fists, hatchets, molotovs, nail bats, guns, mines, and shotgun traps. If you are looking for easy trophies, this game is pretty easy. Basically just killing one person with each weapon type and completing the story. Some people say that this game will take 6-7 hours, but it took me closer to 11. But I searched everything and got all the trophies in one run. Overall, this game is 3.5/5.
