Though it only lasted for two seasons, David Lynch's shockingly original TV drama TWIN PEAKS forever changed the face of primetime television. First off, let me explain that this DVD collection does not contain the Pilot episode. I had to get the Pilot from an imported DVD that I purchased on Ebay. I have yet to hear an explanation as to why the Pilot is not on this collection. (I assume it has something to do with licensing). Anyways, I was going to write my own review, but I read this review on IMDB and decided that it is better than any review I could give. Either way you choose to look at it (and the choice is yours), every episode of this groundbreaking television show grabbed the viewer in its seductive and destructive web... and wouldn't let go. "Twin Peaks" began a string of weird television shows in the early 90's, but, unlike those later shows, "Twin Peaks" would be beloved and remembered long after it was off the air. "Twin Peaks" has earned a spot next to "The Twilight Zone", "Night Gallery", and "Star Trek" in terms of pioneering television and in terms of a cult following deserving of conventions and fanzines. I believe that F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper is one of the most enjoyable and inspiring characters in television history. His simple passions and quirky behavior was a welcomed sight in our living rooms every week during the shows very short run in the late 80's and early 90's. "Twin Peaks" started out on fire, gaining exposure during the pilot's multiple airings. The mystery of Laura Palmer's murderer practically invented conversations at the water cooler. However, the shows second season was scheduled to air on Saturday nights at 10:00, an advertiser's no-man's land. And, with the shows fan base out on the late weekend nights, the shows network decided to cancel it. David Lynch, the shows co-creator, directed a theatrically released film prequel to "Twin Peaks", showing all who missed the shows airings what really happened to Laura the week of her death, and, finally, her killer. As a huge fan of "Twin Peaks", I will tell you that the circle of events that occur within the story enable the viewer to relive the events over and over, each time around with more intensity than before. When you view the movie prequel, diving right back into the series becomes the natural path, allowing one to see things again for what they really are... or aren't. I highly recommend owning the entire series. Without a network messing up your viewing time, you can see the mystery unfold at your own pace. Viewing "Twin Peaks-Fire Walk With Me", along with the television pilot and the entire 29 episode series (about 33 hours all together), is the most fascinating and satisfying viewing experience that the entertainment industry has offered me so far. The music, costumes, editing, acting, and direction all received Emmy nominations, leading one to conclude that "Twin Peaks" not only satisfied the public, but the critics as well. An incredible achievement, "Twin Peaks" is my all-time favorite television show.

Obviously you can read a synopsis on Twin Peaks; many of the DVD auctions on eBay are loaded with them. But I say that if you haven't ever watched this show, then AVOID reading about it! Get it and watch it to experience what "we" did. I speak of folks around my age (48) who took that first eerie yet wonderful ride and are both entertained and haunted by the memories we still carry. Twin Peaks rolls along smoothly, but there are these just disorienting moments that pop up and just about make you dizzy or weak. We're not talking about "Boo! Gotcha!" stuff, where something springs out of the dark; rather, you pause as the scene unfolds ... Those are some of the first words in this series. These and many others will stick with you. Seriously, I just "bumped up" as I think about some of the scenes. And no worries - this isn't ghoulish slasher stuff or gore. Trust me - this is in-your-head stuff. I have just now gotten all of the DVDs together and from watching only the first minutes of the PILOT movie, do I realize that with the decades having passed, that this will be almost like watching it for the first time. I had this sensation of familiarity yet realization that so much has faded from memory. Speaking of the DVDs, here is some information in a nutshell: Season One begins after the "movie" which is or was just called "Pilot" or "Northwest Passage". Due to legal scuffling, the first DVD releases of "Season One" do not have the pilot episode/movie. If you start without that pilot experience, you will be totally confused and the full effect of Twin Peaks will be greatly if not completely ruined. Season Two is plentiful - you'll see great deals on it here on eBay so don't grab the first one you see. The "Definitive Gold Box" set of DVDs is actually the way to go. You get ALL of the series and a lot of extra content. I would have bought THAT set had I done my homework first. I believe that the Region 2 DVD Season One DOES have the Pilot included. You can get a "Region Free" DVD player and watch DVDs from anywhere. We got one here on eBay - a Sony player - and it runs our Farscape R2 disks perfectly. But enough of this "rabbit trail"... DO NOT GO AND "READ-UP" ON TWIN PEAKS BEFORE YOU WATCH IT. If you do, then as I have said, you will mess up what for you could have been a really powerful experience.

When you're watching Twin Peaks for the first time, you really need to start with the pilot. This DVD collection is in PAL format, which works fine on European DVD players, but not on American DVD players, which use the NTSC format. None of the NTSC collections of Twin Peaks include the pilot. Fortunately, my Dell Inspiron laptop will play PAL format DVDS. Twin Peaks was the first of the weird, off-beat prime time TV dramas. It was directed by David Lynch, who is famous for his dark, frightening view of life in small towns. If you've seen Blue Velvet or Wild at Heart, you know what I mean. Missing pilot episode
The DVD's play fine but when I played episode 1 of the DVD labeled "Episodes 1 & 2", It started with "Previously on Twin Peaks" and it showed scenes of them finding Laura Palmer's body and Dale Cooper just arriving in town. If I as watching episode 1, there shouldn't be scenes from a previous episode. Episode 1 & 2 DVD seemed to actually be episodes 2 & 3. Twin Peaks
My husband and I watched Twin Peaks when it first appeared on television in 1990. We enjoyed it then and we thought it would be fun to own the series and watch it again. We were right. The characters are interesting and quirky. The story is well written. There are many facets to each of the characters. So far it has been very enjoyable to watch and it brings back memories.
