NORTH BY NORTHWEST is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. The film is duly famous for several classic and indelible scenes, including the desert biplane encounter and the Mt. Rushmore climax. The original title was THE MAN IN LINCOLN'S NOSE, which was replaced by a reference to a line from William Shakespeare's HAMLET (in which Hamlet says, "I am but mad north-north-west."). The magical combination of Hitchcock and the debonair Grant--who made four wonderful films together--makes NORTH BY NORTHWEST a suspense-filled standout. When Thornhill finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, the world as he knows it comes to an end. Suddenly danger threatens as the hapless businessman is targeted as an American intelligence agent and set up as a killer. All of Thornhill's attempts to straighten things out only make matters worse--and soon the desperate man is on the run from murderous foreign operatives, the CIA, and the police. The supporting cast, including Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, and Martin Landau, is uniformly excellent.

Action, Suspense, Wonderful Music with Wonderful Settings and Plot
This 1959 movie stars Cary Grant as Roger Thornhill, a New York advertising executive, who is mistaken as a CIA agent on the trail of government secret thief, Philip Vandamm (James Mason). It also has a conversation with Hitchcock's daughter, Patricia, who tells Alfred's background and personality characteristics. The final choice as female lead, Eva Marie Saint hosts the special feature. This movie was nominated for 2 Academy Awards--Best Screenplay (Ernest Lehman) and Best Color Art Direction. However, it won none. Nevertheless, it is now classified on the 100 best American Films list, judged by the American Film Institute. You will thoroughly enjoy this movie!

The DVD North by Northwest is a very good movie. The one thing that I really like about buying DVD's is that many of the old movies have been placed on DVD's. This is a movie that was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and it's main characters are Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. At the time that the movie was made Alfred Hitchcock was one of the premier directors of "Who Done It" movies. It's a great, clean thriller that keeps you guessing all the time. It doesn't matter if you are young or old, if you like older movies you will definitely enjoy this movie. The other thing that is great about this movie is that it takes place in a time frame when train travel was still used a lot and that it takes place at the beginning of the Cold War and its final scenes are shot on Mount McKinley. Hitchcock IS the master of suspense!
Having been born in the early 1950's, my Alfred Hitchcock experiences began with Psycho(which I did not see at the movie theater) and ended with Family Plot his last film. With the exception of a PBS showing once in a while, I was pretty ignorant to Mr. Hitchcock's earlier films. So I decided to begin a collection. North by Northwest is probably the best of a collection of great movies. It has romance, action, and suspense. The charaters are believable and the acting is first rate. Even special effects and movie sets hold up to many of todays standards. Special features are interesting and add to the viewing experience by adding insite regarding the Man and his movie. Younger viewers might even be surprised at the overall quality of this and other Hitchcock movies. Makes me want to go ... Alfred and Cary at their best.
My 3rd one! Keep wearing them out. What more could you ask for but Cary Grant playing the leading man for Alfred Hitchcock!!!

Cary Grant one of his best performances
Excellent move with multiple twists. Cary Grant great performance enjoyed his humor in this movie. Fantastic score by Bernard Herman, and of course excellent direction by Alfred Hitchcock Owning it is a plus so now I don’t have to rent it anymore when I want to watch it.
