  • John Petrucci - Rock Discipline (2002, DVD)

Great DVD. I am an advanced player and this DVD has given me some great tools for taking my skills to the next level. It is straightforward, easy to understand (comes with some helpful tablature), and has around 2 hours of content. The exercises on this DVD are geared toward practical application....rather than exotic theory that you never use. Also very interesting is a tour of John's guitar rig. I think that is great content to include in terms of understanding John's overall style and tone. (Material that is typically not included with similar instructional DVD's) This DVD is somewhat expensive...but, it is well worth the money when you compare how much you would spend to have a private lesson or two with someone of John's caliber.

  • This DVD is fantastic!

This DVD is very straightforward and easy to follow. That's probably the greatest thing about it. A lot of instructional DVDs feature famous guitar players showing off their chops, then saying "so that's how you play it," and you are left in awe and confusion. John Petrucci shows his techniques in slow-motion, and very clearly explains how to perfect them. If you follow this DVD religiously, you will end up with monster chops. There's no question about it. As long as you are disciplined about it, you'll notice results quickly. I suppose that's why it's called Rock Discipline. It's not really very fun or entertaining, but it is a proven way to improve your accuracy and timing, and it will teach you new techniques. As long as you're dedicated. I also enjoyed the bonus features. It ...

  • John Petrucci Rock Discipline DVD

This is an awesome DVD. It covers many advanced and basic techniques from warm ups to sweep picking and chord building. It is 2 hours long and comes with a tab and sheet music booklet to help you play along with John as he walks you through the whole DVD. It covers techniques and exercises for both hands. Playing along with this DVD has helped so much. I have learned to sweep with ease, learned how to spice up rythm patterns by building chords, improved my speed, and the scale fragments has helpedme to achieve playing that a month ago I had thought impossible. It also comes loaded with crazy extras like G3 footage, bloopers, guitar stats, and small bits of misc. interviews with John. I highly recomend this DVD for guitarist of all skill levels. There are no bad features and it is well ...

  • Focus on Practice

This is an Excellent Training Teaching Tool. What Sets it Apart from many similar products on the market is the actual "How To Information".Namely, "How to Practice and How To Use a Metronome." Another Very Important Topic, often overlooked (or left out, cause it dosen't sound commercial enough) is the Art of Warming Up. If You Buy This and Actually USE IT CORRECTLY :) You Will See Results, not only in your Chops but your Practice Skills As Well. And Yes, Learning How to Practice, does take Practice. As Your Practice Skills Improve, you will learn new information quicker. The Skills Learned in this Viedo or any method that focus on the art of practice will last you a lifetime. Not to Mention Your Chops Will be vastly Improved and those two skills you can take with you no matter what ...

  • Very good for beginners

I had to give away my first DVD to a friend. I like it enough to buy it again. Its a great video for beginners because the instructions are step by step. John Petrucci teaches you how to use a metronome, how to practice and what to practice. If you follow his instructions your skills will definitely improve - I know mine have. Still - there is a lot of material in the DVD to keep you busy for a long long time.
