Saddle up for some musical fun!
Calamity Jane is a raucously good musical ride from beginning to end. Songs include romantic ballads (Higher Than A Hawk), toe-tapping numbers (Just Blew In From The Windy City; Deadwood Stage) and of course, the Academy Award winning "Secret Love". The title character is played by everybody’s favorite girl-next-door Doris Day, and the larger than life Wild Bill Hickok is portrayed by baritone Howard Keel, fresh off his role of Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun. SYNOPSIS: At the center of Deadwood sits Millie’s Saloon where the male population are hankering for some female entertainment. Enter Calamity boasting that she is able to persuade Adelaide Adams (Gale Robbins), a ravishing beauty who has captured the heart of men all over, to perform in Deadwood. Once Katie arrives in Deadwood she is immediately the center of attraction for Wild Bill Hickok (Keel) and Lt. Danny Gilmartin (Philip Carey), who is the unwitting object of Calamity’s love. Katie is torn between her friendship with Calamity and her growing attraction to Lt. Gilmartin. Katie helps transform tomboy Calamity into a beautiful women, to the delightful tune of "A Woman’s Touch". At a fancy dress ball, Calamity witnesses Lt. Gilmartin kissing Katie. This immediately produces tension between the previously chummy Calamity and Katie. Sparks fly as Calamity orders Katie to ‘git out of town’. Wild Bill, who has come to realized that Katie has chosen Gilmartin over himself, tries to comfort Calamity, and in the process he and Calamity fall in love (Secret Love). Calamity now regrets her hasty words to Katie, and engages in a break-neck chase with the stagecoach in order to convince Katie to stay. Wedding bells toll and all live happily ever after. This is an excellent DVD -- full of fun, music and good entertainment.

I've always loved this Doris Day, Howard Keel film. If you like musicals or are a Doris Day fan of any kind, you'll enjoy this film too! Doris Day plays a tomboy cowgirl named Calamity Jane with a wild imagination and a knack for stetching the truth (a lot!). She goes to Chicago to bring back the famous Adelaid Adams (a famous actress) to her hometown of Deadwood City. She brings back an actress whom she thinks is the great Adelaid Adams, but in reality turns out to be her maid looking for an opportunity to be on the stage. Once the town gets over their anger of her deciving them, the actress becomes a permanent fixture in the town of Deadwood. That is until she's caught kissing Calamity's secret crush, and the war is on. To see how it all works out you'll have to watch the film. I ... I've always loved this Doris Day, Howard Keel film. A "Whip Crack Away" Good Time!
A classic, through and through. If you like the by-gone days of singing cowboys, dancing girls, corny dialogue, and family friendly fun, then this movie is for you. Doris Day is as cute as she gets playing the lead role. The simple boy meets girl, 'save the town (saloon)" theme may be an old one, but the music, catchy lyrics and old time fun will have you watch it again and again.

A cute, fun musical that will have you singing along!
One of the best musicals of yesterday! Doris Day is adorable and the music is fantastically fun! Howard Keel is just as good as he was in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! A pretty woman story with a western kick.
