Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is the fourth entry in the Alone in the Dark series, continuing the story set up by the previous installments. Charles Fisk has gone missing on Shadow Island and is presumed dead. His good friend, private investigator Edward Carnby, has chartered a plane to Shadow Island to investigate the disappearance of his friend and discover what the island's owner, Obed Morton, is planning. Ailene Cedrac, an ethnology Professor at Boston University, also has an interest in the island -- she believes that her long lost father is located there. Driven by intrigue as well as a desire for closure, both Cedrac and Carnby fly to the island on Halloween night.<br><br>Players venture through this horror-themed game with polygonal characters in 3D pre-rendered backgrounds similar to the Resident Evil games. Weapons such as pistols, shotguns and knives are used to battle the shadow-like demons on the island. In addition to survival tactics and defensive play, gamers also solve a series of puzzles in order to progress through the various mansion, laboratory and underground levels. There are two different versions of the game, one being from Carnby's perspective and the other from Cedrac's.<br><br>The original Alone in the Dark is often considered the pioneer of the "Survival Horror" genre, inspiring games such as Resident Evil series and countless other games of the same type.

    Its still a fun game if you can get past the bugs.

    I love survival horror and I really wanted to like the game, which I did to an extent but the cons were more than I wanted in a survival horror game. I liked its concept, using the map, getting keys, solving puzzles. And the graphics are not bad for a ps1 game in my opinion. I didn't like that the game gave you no hints on where the keys went. You found a key and basically had to try every door. I was guessing on every key and mostly every puzzle and when it did give hints they were very vague. Also my game glitched on the boss I am currently fighting. The boss disappeared and left the boss music running with nothing to defeat so i cant progress. That is another thing it has a few bugs, which I haven't experienced with my other horror games.

    I Enjoyed It...VERY creepy game.

    There are two Characters that you control, Edward and Aline, as soon as they land on the island after a mysterious plane crash, you can choose which character you want to be. There are two disks in the CD case. They discover an Indian Mansion and uh, something's seriously wrong with it. some of the enemies are zombie-LIKE creatures, you have spiders, dogs and other big boss creatures. the thing is, i think some enemies will just randomly pop out of nowhere. there was one time i was in the hall, i turned around to go the other way, but i changed my mind and turned around, then BAM, a zombie was right in front of me. so i think they just appear. When you finish the game, thats it, there really isnt any goodies at the end that i know of, you just start all over. but yea, its a pretty good ...

    alone in the dark:the new nightmare/ps 1&2

    this game is actually quite good for a ps1. it has a story line that plays through the course of the game. u can pick which character you wish to be;aline or edward carnby.so you actually play it twice but as 2 seperate people with 2 different set ups.the graphics are quite good and the game is definately challenging.it has taken me several hours just to make it through 3/4 of aline's character. you can buy or download an e-book to guide you through the game(a must for even good gamers!)i would definatly recomend this game for those who like a challenge and mystery type games!

    An alright fright.

    This game was a good entry into the Alone in the Dark series, however after having played Resident Evil and so many other survival horror games I have to say that this game has flaws. It is very repeditive and teh enemies are very hard near the beginning of the game, especially with the lack of ammo and the need to use up most of it on a single monster. Without the gameshark cheat device some gamers may have trouble navigating through the game, and will find this so frustrating that they may be turned off of the game. This is a shame as it has a great story and is definitely worth checking out.
