The Edies of this life may seem far fetching, but the simpleness of it all is clear that this may be more rampant then we may all think. The mother died one year after this films debut. This documentary including Jacquline Kennedy and Grey Gardens bringing to mind all the joys we face yet the intersting way that loneliness can also preserve life in such a moment. Grey Gardens will bring sadness and a chance to understand perseverance. Great film to watch on a sunday afternoon. The East Hamptons seems opened but at the same time underminded. 5***** A mother daughter relationship which has voids but in the end each will comfort souls. The Characters of Grey Gardens
This is a great documentary of two very quirky gals. To me it showed just because you have money...which they came from but no longer have, can't buy you class. Jacquline Kennedy had Grey Gardens brought up to code many years ago when it was in danger of the wrecking ball. But bringing it up to code and decorating are two very different things. One can only imagine the grande manor it once was. But the real topic of this excellent documentary is the two gals. Edie and her mother. Mother still rules and continues pushing Edie's buttons she installed so long ago. All very amusing. I was intrigued by a review I read on a book about the girls and seeing a clip from the Broadway show titled "Grey Gardens'. So when I found this documentary I very happy so I purchased it and ... Fascinating! Captivating! Enchanting! GIVE ME MORE! GIVE ME MORE!
As someone who became introducecd to the Beales thanks to a premium-channel movie offering, this DVD fostered a deeper appreciation for the actresses who played Edith and Edie! The insight this DVD provides helps me better understand what a life of solitude and seclusion can bring about. Try as I might to dislike Edith, I can appreciate her staying true to her convictions. It also makes me feel even more empathy for Edie. She wanted more. She wanted to give more. She wanted to take more. She, though, was a dutiful daughter and stayed with her mother through the good and the bad. I suggest pairing this DVD with the original "Grey Gardens" and throw in the HBO movie. I've done more research on the Beales thanks to what I've seen and am even more enchanted to ... THE MAYSLES HAVE DONE IT AGAIN
While watching "The Beales of Grey Gardens" I was simply amazed at the amount of priceless footage that did not make it into the original film! Edie is truly a legend and icon of her time. It is not surprising that her style has been copied by numerous fashion designers; that woman definitely had a sense of style and it seems could make virtually any piece of clothing look good on her. If you are a fan of the original film, the new documentary is a MUST-SEE. Just when you thought you knew the two girls, along comes all the stuff you've never seen before, and you will fall in love with them all over again. The only down side is that at the end you will feel sorry that there will be no more antics of Big and Little Edith Beale to delight you for hours on end, but you be ... Disappointed
I was disappointed because i have the Beales of Grey Gardens criterion collection and it iis a 2 dvd set... i just saw criterion collection and the Beales on the front and assumed this was..it wasnt it was only one dvd..and i paid the same price that i would have for the original 2 dvd set... i wore my other one out is why i ordered this one as a replacement..
