A rebellious teenage girl (Leilee Sobieski) who dresses in Gothic garb and wears harsh metal jewelry in the piercings that cover her face, finds a friend in a conservative middle-aged man (Albert Brooks) working in a men's clothing store. While the pair initially seem like total opposites, they soon learn that have a lot in common and can really relate to each other.Using a first-person narrative that is reminiscent of Wynona Ryder's unhappy teenagers in HEATHERS and GIRL INTERRUPTED, this film gives its full, uninterrupted attention to the cryptic mutterings of its protagonist, Jennifer (Sobieski). She has a vivid imagination and the ability to see the worst in everything. Her English teacher is evil and has fangs, her classmates are buxom bimbos who have recently undergone nose jobs, and her weird mother (when not talking about the benefits of women eating blood in the form of brisket for dinner) has friends that are fatter than elephants. Jennifer's visions are illustrated by distorted camera angles that make comedy of her exaggerations. But when Jennifer meets Randall (Brooks), a boring and equally pessimistic guy, her perspective changes. She wants him to accept her. And when he reaches out to her, she accepts him. MY FIRST MISTER therefore becomes a sweet story about friendship, self-motivation, and changing your life for the better.

Unique Friendship Will Tug at the Heart Strings
Jennifer is a goth girl trapped in a world with an overly-optimistic mother and dim-witted classmates. Although she has alot to offer, she shys away from a world that seems to reject her. Eventually, Jennifer meets Randall, a conservative yet kind owner of a high-end men's clothing shop who ends up giving her a job. As different as day and night, Randall and Jennifer forge a great friendship and find what each other has been seeking through the friendship. Randall and Jennifer learn a great deal and support each other in life's endeavors. She teaches him to loosen up and try new things and he teaches her that she is beautiful and that she has what it takes to be an independent young adult. However, Randall has a secret that he's hiding from Jennifer. It gets to a point where ... Jennifer is a goth girl trapped in a world with an overly-optimistic mother and dim-witted classmates. She's angry and jaded when she finds out that he's been keeping a secret from her which ultimately means a permanent end to what they had. She also discovers that Randall has a son who Jennifer ends up befriending through tragic circumstances. If anything, Randall teachers Jennifer to love and trust. This is a good movie and instead of turning the tale into a Lolita-esque type romance, the movie shows that two people, no matter how different, can offer each other priceless lessons in life. Not too many movies involving an older man and young girl do this, so this movie is unique in that sense. This movie is very good and is really for anyone from teenagers to older people. Albert Brooks and Lelee Sobieski star in "My First Mister". This movie is funny but it will also tug at your heart strings.

Very good movie - it will strike you at some point
I was not sure what to expect from an Albert Brooks movie called MY FIRST MISTER. I got classic Albert Brooks wit mixed in with modern day female teen insecurities. This is a combination that does not seem like it could, or should, work. An old man set in his ways and a young girl that is border-line freakish. I watched it twice. These two characters work great together. Really funny. There are major spoilers that could easily be written in one of these reviews - this one is safe - read on. I was worried that the relationship between the old man and the girl might get SERIOUS. Well it does, but not in the way I was worried about. Randall (BROOKS) and Jennifer (SOBIESKI) each learn to open up, at least a little, to the others persons perspective on the world. This is funny in a ... I was not sure what to expect from an Albert Brooks movie called MY FIRST MISTER. I got classic Albert Brooks wit mixed in with modern day female teen insecurities. The first two-thirds of the movie are just a set up for the last third. This is the get your tissues part of the film that plucks through several emotional states in rapid succession. It's the best part with the best one-liner joke - and I can't tell you a thing about it without spoiling the show for you! Rent this or buy it - at least see it once RIGHT NOW!. Only needs to be watched once to catch everything but it is a good one to watch once a year. I compare Leilee Sobieski to Helen Hunt - a great actress, similar look and style.

A sweet story, especially the first half
I loved this movie for the first hour, then just liked it for the next hour. Overall, though, this is a beautiful story of an unusual, but very real, human relationship.

Seen this movie when it first came out loved in then an love it now. The actors are very engaging an has all the motion of a 4star movie. Great movie an entertaining 👏.

My First Mister
Ok, the ending is a bit weak BUT what a delightful, humorous and surprising film. The characters took me by surprise and so of course the performances by the actors were thereby well done. The dialogue gives the characters ... Character. Who knew Leelee Sobieski would make a great Goth teen or Albert Brooks could be so very appealing. Their conversations and relationship are the heart of the film and heart it has. I like movies that take me by surprise, that are better than expected. I had no expectations of this movie othe than Netflix said I would like it. I loved it and therefore bought the dvd.Ok, the ending is a bit weak BUT what a delightful, humorous and surprising film.
