Veteran publisher Koei draws more inspiration from Chinese literature's <I>Romance of the Three Kingdoms</I> for its sixth installment of Dynasty Warriors. As with previous titles in the action-oriented series, players choose from a variety of stout heroes and noble warriors before engaging in historically inspired battles featuring hundreds of combatants. While the series has been criticized for its lack of significant changes from release to release, Dynasty Warriors 6 adds a number of enhancements to the well-traveled franchise. Chief among the new features is a revamped graphics engine designed from the ground-up to take advantage of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. This translates into larger onscreen armies, more open environments, 60 frames-per-second action, and refined character models. The emphasis is still on defeating throngs of enemies with swords, giant hammers, polearms, and other weapons, with lengthy combo chains possible by varying attacks.<br><br>As players become more skilled in combat, they can choose from a variety of skills to customize their heroes as they see fit. A new "renbu" system allows characters to earn immediate combat bonuses through dexterous play, but these bonuses are lost once the battle is over. Characters also have the ability to swim across water and scale walls to perform surprise attacks on enemy camps. Another change is the omission of bodyguards, so players must go it alone instead of having a personal entourage. In their place is a faithful steed that can be called upon in a pinch to make hasty retreats or to charge at full gallop into groups. The character's horse will also level up along with characters, improving attributes in speed or power in combat. Featured game types include Musou Mode, a character-specific campaign, Challenge Mode, offering specific goals to complete, and Free, which involves building a character's stats on any unlocked battlefield. Players can also team-up with a friend via split-screen display.

Another great Dynasty Warriors game. Par visual effort
Once again the heroes of Dynasty Warriors meet on a battlefield that has incorperated new features and challenges. The skinny: All in all, if you've played any of the previous DW games don't don't expect a whole new style of play. Basiscally it's the same as ever, just a bit more challenging and they've made it into a bit more of an rpg style system. Gameplay: Cut, paste. The gameplay is almost identical to recent titles. The only real difference now is magic tomes you can pick up and use(essentially they are the item you could get in other titles to increase your attack strength, defense and make your musou true during a short time). Now, you get something called a special attack eg: true speed. Using this makes you incredibly fast and enemies drop crazy amounts of items. Levelling ... Once again the heroes of Dynasty Warriors meet on a battlefield that has incorperated new features and challenges. Levelling up now grants you points to put towards a skill tree for each character. Each character gets a unique tree with multiple paths you can take. Skills earned in this tree range from health, attack, and defense upgrades to special skills you can use on the battlefield. All those times in past titles that you got frustrated when allied officers stole the kill from you are over. Now, when an enemy officer is killed they drop an experience basket for you. No more pesky allies taking your exp points. They've now given you a renbue meter which will limit how many times you can charge attack until you've filled the meter (it doesnt't deplete like your musou meter does). The game has now gone from a button mashers heaven to a button mashers utopia. This is because now with the renbue meter full you can endlessly press square and never stop attacking. If you wanted to you could walk across the map without missing a swing. Each level now gives you target goals to accomplish. Each level has multiple targets you can achieve that award experience and weapons when completed. (ex: Defeat all enemy officers in 15 minutes. 700exp) You and your horse can swim now. Visuals: The visuals in this installment were far from impressive admittedly. The characters still look blocky as do the random soldiers (My PS3 is hooked up via HDMI to my plasma screen and even that doesn't seem to help...it just makes it more obvious if anything). Cutscenes are still where the visuals get cleaned up but they're still very last generation graphics. Understadably, lag is still and issue especially in co-op play. Every now and then you will run into an invisible group of enemies and all of a sudden be surrounded by three officers. Keep an eye on your map. Run down: Pros: Solid gameplay New skill tree system Officers Drop Experience Unique Optional Map Goals Characters and horses can swim Map creativity Fun Replay value Cons: Lag issues Visuals/graphics Swimming perk is useless Some maps are maze-like and tedious Overall this is a game I recommend to both DW fans and new players alike. 4.5/5 stars.

Yet another Dynasty Warriors
I started playing Dynasty Warriors right after 3 came out. I played each one as it came out and each time it got a little better than the last one. Dynasty Warriors 6 is definitely an improvement. The graphics are (slightly) better than previous titles in the series. The RPG-esque leveling system is new and exciting for people who have gotten bored with the usual Dynasty Warriors system. The combat system is completely revamped. While I haven't gotten around to testing out all of the characters just yet, they all seem fairly unique. Also, what was interesting to me is that the voice actors in this game FINALLY began pronouncing Cao Cao's name correctly. Musou mode is only available to a select number of characters. This can be seen as a good thing to some, however, because really, who wants to go through the whole game as Zhen Ji? The cutscenes are incredibly cheesy. Its awful. However, no one plays a game like Dynasty Warriors for the cut scenes, so it can be forgiven. Swimming, while in theory a nice feature, actually is just a pointless waste of time, especially when you accidentally fall off a cliff into the water and can't find your way out while archers in boats are pelting you with arrows. The new Renbu attack system is kind of cool at first, but in reality, all it does is change the way you mash buttons. And the graphics! I was supposed to be playing this on PS3! It looks like a PS2 game. They really could have worked on that a little more. And also, the game doesn't offer trophies, so there's no way for you to show off that you've fully leveled every character to everyone else. The best part of the game is that the AI has been completely reworked. No more are the days when you rush into battle, only to be killed because none of your teammates are following you. There are a lot more enemies, too. I can't get through a single level without killing 700-1000 people. And the enemies lay on the ground, dead, for awhile after they are defeated. This adds to the whole carnage thing. The siege weapons' purposes are a lot more defined in this game, as well. Despite the bad points, I'd say this game is well worth it. And since it's so cheap, there's really no reason not to get it!

Want the latest and best DW title that you can enjoy, buy DW7 instead.
Dynasty Warriors 6 was an attempt to change up what the old games 2-5 had done. The renbu was the big alteration that a normal fan of this series would notice. This change is definately interesting at first, but then the repetitive mashing of a single button will make you miss the former combos you could do in the earily titles. With this said, this new fighting style seems to have been 'unfinished' for lack of a better term. Several of the characters have the exact same fighting style even if they are using a different weapon (look for the officers fighting stance in the Camp to recognized who plays exactly the same). This is a BIG negitive change from the former titles which had delivered a completely different feel for each and every officer. Officers have had their signature features ... Officers have had their signature features removed such as Zhang He and his "Claws" and Wei Yan and his "Double Vouge". There was little delivered in the effort to upgrade graphics. Though there is a few pros to this title. The addition of little things was definately a plus. These include the ability to swim and climb latters; for the horse mounts, you are able to jump, swim and now level up. Also there are a wide array of other inclusions with experience drops and a level-up tree. These additions however do not make up for the negitive alteratons the game had made, and the play life on this title for most fans of this series is much less then its formers. DW7 is now currently available and I would suggest grabing this title instead. This review is coming from a person who is a die-hard fan of this gaming series and was excited for this titles release. DW6 was a definate let down for myself. Koei could have definitly put more work into this title if they expected to change up so much.

Dynasty Warriors being one of my favorite games, really got me interested in buying 6 for the ps3. I started with dynasty warriors 3 and finally worked my way up to 6. This took years mind you. The gameplay is definatly different. there are no ultimate weapons, no super horses and not as many characters, and also some of the characters are copies of others, for example zhen ji, and diao chan both use whips as their weapons. The combo systems are great, but now you constantly have to keep fighting to get your renbu meter to the max, allowing you to continue using your combo uninterrupted. Over all i think its a great game, but i think i could use some more individuality, as far as weapons and characters go. A mix of DW6 fighting style with the weapons detail of DW5 would create IMO the best ... Dynasty Warriors being one of my favorite games, really got me interested in buying 6 for the ps3. Need something to challenge your gaming abilities.....?
.....well this is your game. Pick from 9 different officers and tackle the battlefield. Kung-fu and martial arts moves are super slick in this game. You have an entire battlefield to conquer and many various different enemies to hack, dice and slice up. Master different attacks and styles, fight side by side with your other officers (as well as another player on the same PS3) and conquer ancient China! Plus, playing this game is like watching a kung-fu movie. You have total control of your charector. Ride a horse into battle, storm the gates of a castle or just bash the heck out of everything/everyone you see. This game is off the hook. I have had it for 3 days now and still cant get past the 2nd level. Not thats its too hard, but it sure has a big challenge waiting around every ... .....well this is your game. Learning to fight in this game is pretty easy, but learning how to fight every opponent in the game takes some skill. Mastering each officer takes a bit of time, but once you get 1/2 way to good at it you cant put the game down. It's your army versus an entire battlefield of opponents! Use the terrain to your advantage, capture garrisons, castles and towers to level the battlefield. You can even fight the opposition officers and generals to deplete the opposition's moral and let your army duke it out with the peons in the game. Strategy is a must in this game. You cant conquer the battle on your own, you need to help your other units and position your forces appropriately. The graphics are amazing. The storyline is intreging and the possibilities are endless. If you are a fan of any war-style game, you will have nothing but appreciation for Dynasty Warriors 6. I love this game!
