Inferior to Gone with the Wind and other Civil War films in the same decade
Mini Review of "Band of Angels (1957)" Pros: • Unlike Clarke Gable's previous Civil War film, Band of Angels depicts slavery as horrible, degrading, and inhumane. Part of this is shown through the eyes of the biracial protagonist Amantha Starr and the Black slave Rau-Ru (Sidney Poitier). Hamish Bond (Clark Gable) has a lengthy monologue about the repulsive brutality of the slave trade that he was complicit in and now deeply regrets. • Rau-Ru (Sidney Poitier) is a definite step up in terms of the depiction of a Black slave character. Rau-Ru is intelligent, well spoken, capable, utterly resentful of the fact that he is a slave, manages to become a Sergeant in the Union army, and has extremely conflicted feelings about his owner and father figure Hamish Bond (Clark Gable). • Hamish Bond ... Cons: • While slavery is depicted as evil, there are two on screen depictions of benevolent slave owners 😑. • All of the named Union soldiers in the film except Rau-Ru (Sidney Poitier) are depicted as racists, hypocrites, predators of women, petty, greedy, and pillagers 😠. Comparisons to Clarke Gable's much more popular Civil film Gone with the Wind are inevitable and unfortunately Band of Angels falls short for two big reasons. 1) This film isn't nearly as good as Gone with the Wind in terms of acting, cinematography, scope, score, or production value. 2) Band of Angels is only slightly better when it comes to accurately depicting the American Civil War than Gone with the Wind. Gone with the Wind is an epic ode to the Lost Cause of the Confederacy and Band of the Angels does try to correct a few of the harmful depictions in the (in)famous 1939 film such as Black characters not being borderline racist one note characters and slavery being horrendous, but pretty much everything else about Band of Angels thesis about the war lines up with that of Gone with the Wind. Band of Angels even comes up short when compared to other Civil War films made in the same decade, The Tall Target (1951), The Red Badge of Courage (1951), and Friendly Persuasion (1956), all of which leave Band of Angels in the dust in terms of quality and historical accuracy. This film is for Clarke Gable and/or Civil War completionists only.

I recommend the movie but the title is misleading.
A great movie which addresses the racial issue in the deep south. All the characters we believable. The movie had lesson. I loved it.

Gone with the wind lite
This movie is watered down version of Gone with the wind. Its set during the Civil War with Clark Gable romancing Yvonne DeCarlo a mulatto raised white. The movie bounces from ugly racism to musical ballads with bipolar bravado. One can't help but notice the 'rushed' quality of the situations and dialogue. This is the curse of the novel turned movie there is not enough time to flesh out characters. The movie has some good things going for it, a young Sidney Poitier, a still rakish Clark Gable barely missing a beat from Gone w/t Wind and costumes and set designs that rival the multi Oscar winner.This movie is watered down version of Gone with the wind. A Great Romantic Epic of the Old South
This is a movie I saw many years ago --- I have a copy of it in storage on VHS. The DVD is exactly like new -- "mint" condition. I love Yvonne DeCarlo and Gable in this --- amazing that he made it almost 20 years after "Gone with the Wind." Very entertaining!!!!!!!!

Like Rhett Butler, Gable's Hamish Bond is an outwardly respectable Southern man who nevertheless is a bit rough around the edges and has a checkered past. BAND OF ANGELS was made 18 years after GONE WITH THE WIND, but Gable doesn't look, act, or dress much differently from his Rhett Butler persona. But where GONE WITH THE WIND explored the effects of the Civil War on a formerly privileged Southern girl, emphasizing Yankees VS Confederates, BAND OF ANGELS is all about race. Before the Civil War begins, privileged Southern girl Amantha Starr (Yvonne DeCarlo) learns that her father has died and that her mother, who died ... Amantha, who appears white, is therefore half black and must be sold on the auction block. Though this may strike modern viewers as a melodramatic contrivance, the practice has a basis in fact, when a person with even a drop of "Negro blood" and no legal freedom papers could be sold. Amantha is bought by Bond, and begins to fall in love with him, but is somewhat taken aback when he tells her he is using an assumed name and has done some pretty bad things in the past. Added to the mix is Sidney Poitier as an educated slave whom Bond has treated like a son. Poitier makes a thought-provoking speech about how kindness is more of a trap for a slave than is cruel treatment, and how Amantha is denying her people by choosing to live as white. The slaves in general have more human depth than do the GONE WITH THE WIND slaves. Even the silly maid, Dolly, has a malevolent side, unlike GWTW's Prissy who is merely silly. Michelle, the housekeeper, speaks perfect English and is young and beautiful, hardly the typical Mammy. Bottom line: this film is entertaining, socially relevant, and is a parallel GONE WITH THE WIND rather than an imitation. It was hard enough for Scarlett to succeed in a man's world; for Amantha to get anywhere as a wealthy white girl abruptly transformed into a penniless black slave in a man's world is even harder. Fascinating story.
