  • Saw this when it came out in 1950s :) Yeah, I'm that old

This is in the 1950s "what horror can we expect?" type movies a lot of hyp, but James Arness went on to star for 20 years as the lead in GUNSMOKE TV Western. You have to take the breaks when they come. Usual cheesy alien and people running about. However, it is still a real look at what we saw and cringed at in the theaters while munching popcorn and drinking Coca-Cola. I saw this in a theater in San Antonio in the heat of the summer. My mother and I were on our way to a tour of Mexico and our hotel stopover was not air conditioned, we saw it three times in a row to stay cool. I just bought this in 2021 to show my son and granddaughter.

  • The Old Thing - from another world

A space traveler crash lands in the Arctic. He and his ship are soon frozen. Some USAAF men and scientists discover it and try to thaw it but succeed only in destroying the ship. The pilot, however, survives, and they haul him, in his cake of ice, back to the base camp. When he accidentally thaws and returns to life, he realizes that he is stranded on an unfriendly world. He is not a happy camper. He is eight feet tall, very strong, very angry, and bears a vague resemblance to James Arness. He has some, er, peculiarities. He has the physiology of a vegetable - sap is his blood - and he can regrow a severed limb. He thrives on animal blood - four-legged, two-legged, he isn't particular. His mission is to grow an army of others like him from seeds that he carries under his ...

  • Absolute classic 1950s scifi / horror.

As a kid I must have watched The Thing on a 21" B&W TV, with a horribly grainy print of the movie. It's really nice to see it in this digital format on a big screen TV.

  • The Thing - Classic chiller

This was one of the first modern science fiction movies that I ever saw (at age 10)when it had me peeking through my fingers at the local movie theatre. In retrospect, I can now appreciate the classic components of crisp dialogue (Howard Hawks, the producer, was a master in this department) combined with excellent lighting and subtle camera angles. This film is a fine representative of the science fiction genre of the 50's - minimal special effects combined with a great suspensful story line, terrific character acting and chilling bursts of terrifying action. It's as strong a film today as it was in 1951. Watch the skies!
