great casting, ok film
The best parts of the film are the women, the script, the music, and Ben & Jerry Stiller. All the women were well-cast in this film, such as Jennifer Love Hewitt as a lovesick fan, Amy Brenneman as the lead singer's wife, and Bridgette Wilson, who's supposed to marry one of the other band members. Ben & Jerry Stiller are funny as the father-son duo in charge of a record company. The script is good, as it pokes fun at the 80s and all the dumb things celebrities did (and still do), back then. The music was well-executed in that it had the 80s sound and feel. The only bad thing about this movie is WILL FERRELL. He is so unfunny. Ben Stiller is funnier, as is Owen Wilson, but he's an entirely different subject. The producers should've gone with Adam Sandler! At least he can make me laugh. All ... as implausible as real life
The movie is implausible, as is real life, and lurches from point to point, happening to happening-- and shares the loose ends and untidy resolutions that real life forces upon us, too. Will Ferrell plays the most unfunny, boring, obsessive-compulsive middle aged kid possible-- someone a lot of us "know" in real life, but lacks the bite in it that would have taken the movie to the next level. The Jennifer Love Hewitt role was well handled, but could have had more mania and sting to it, while all of the other roles were handled almost perfectly for the framework, so it is hard to tell if the director "dialed them back" or if they just played the role the way it was written. Good.
