This is a must for any collector, dealer, or numismatist!
The "Red Book" is the time-honored, and well-respected guide for coin collectors, and should be on the shelf of every collector and dealer. Please know, however, that it is only a guide, and not the final word on coin pricing. Here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Because of space limitations, not all grades are included. Only a represenative sampling is included for most coins, so you may see VF20, EF40, MS63, MS65, and then a listing for a proof coin or two. The Sheldon scale is a 70-point system, and there can be HUGE variations among the grades. In other words, the guide generally will not show you the vast spread between an MS-69 coin versus one graded MS-65. 2. There are many die variations and other differences that impact coin value, but most of these will not appear in ... So, if you look at listings for a 1955 Franklin Half, you will not see the so-called "Bugs Bunny" (or Franklinstein) die variety. The same limitation applies to many other coins throughout the guide. 3. The law of averages applies throughout the guide. In other words, these are average prices, which do not account for subjective factors. An MS-65 coin that is bright white, free of bag marks will likely have greater appeal (and command a higher price) than the the same coin with a little hazing and a bit of bagginess. There's no way to account for this, so it's an important consideration when buying or selling coins, as the prices may be higher or lower than the averages because of these and other factors. 4. There's no accounting for the controversial aspects of graded vs. raw coins, let alone whether the coin was graded by one of the two top grading companies versus all the others. And, of course, the guide does not factor in the value (perceived or real) of the CAC "green bean" decal that signifies 3rd party validation of grading. These are a few of the things to consider, but please don't mistake these as criticisms of this excellent resource. I recommend you use the guide as a "compass" and not as an exact "roadmap" to your coin collecting. The guide is also an excellent tool for benchmarking short- and long-term pricing trends, which is why so many people hold onto their guides for many years (even decades). With this "compass" in hand, your numismatic journey of collecting, buying, trading, and selling coins can be fun and profitable.

Great value for money and a great source of information
I am fairly new to coin collecting. I was drawn first to collecting due to the value of silver and gold but then it grew into the collectivity value of coins and hopefully future growth to pass on. I purchased this book because I wanted to have a reference source to help me decide what was a good investment. The book has a lot of information that varies from history of coinage to current values based on conditions. One thing I like is that the value shown on this book is based on retail prices which is where I deal as buyer/collector. It also recommends other sources of information if you are looking at dealers values. I like that it is on spiral so it stays open on the page you have selected while inspecting coins. It has a lot of illustrations as well to help you determine the ... I am fairly new to coin collecting. Informative and very easy to use
This book is very easy to use and understand. It is reasonably priced. The book explains coins in detail and gives a background to coin collecting. It provides a glossary, vocabulary, terms and an overview for the reader. My only complaint is that it ends with coins from the year 2011, when it should end with at least the year ending in 2012.

Red book of coin values. The gold standard.
I have been collecting for years . This book is all I use in evaluating coins. It has been the standard for many collectors in my circle for as long as I have been collecting. You can always tell a newbie at a coin auction because they just buy any ol book . The trubadors in the game only use the Red book of coin values.
