NIS America's quirky, demon-themed RPG makes its first appearance on a non-Sony platform in Disgaea DS. Players take on the role of Laharl, Prince of the Netherworld, as he awakes from a two year slumber only to find a number of demons scrambling to take the throne of his recently deceased father. As in all games in the series, the battle in Disgaea DS unfolds in a strategic, turn-based manner, but the DS gives players the added bonuses of viewing the entire battle map in the top screen and controlling the action with either the buttons or the stylus.<br><br>The single-player campaign offers gamers an extremely deep experience, exemplified by the fact that within the game there are hundreds of different items, and within each item there are 100 randomly generated game levels. Disgaea DS also offers a multiplayer mode in which two gamers can go head-to-head, battling with any of the various characters they capture during the single-player mode.

An excellent game for the NDS system!
Disgaea DS is a remake of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and a port of its PSP remake for the Nintendo DS. It is the second port of the original Disgaea. Disgaea DS includes all features added in the PSP remake as well as the ablility to recruit extra characters such as Adell and Rozalin. It uses the Top Screen of the Nintendo DS as map grid in battle. It is also used to display character status screens rather than the Touch Screen. The Touch Screen can be used to select commands due to the new touch buttons added. It can be used to also move Laharl in the Hub World. Disgaea DS also features PvP multiplayer and the ability to sell items to other people. Due to the limitations of the Nintendo DS hardware compared to the Playstation 2 or PSP, multiple aspects of the game were downgraded or ... The BGM has reduced quality due to the DS's MIDI such as no vocals or lyrics in songs. Like the PSP version, the tracks "One with the Stars" and "The Invasion From Within" are absent. The visuals of special skills has been reduced in quality. Most special attacks cause the screen to black out with only the user and enemies affected being visible. The reason is that the DS has limited memory, so it cannot display the entire stage or every sprite at once during a special skill. The story remains the same from the original Disgaea, including all stages and cutscenes. It also retains Etna Mode and the extra stages from the PSP remake.

The game's most striking aspect is its geo-effect system. Geo symbols, which are colored objects that grant special effects to their same-colored geo panels, can significantly alter the battlefield to the point that you can't proceed without dismantling or transferring them. For this reason, you might want to destroy every geo symbol on the map, but the most effective way of doing so, chaining, involves both the transferring and destruction of multiple geo symbols, which can quickly become tiresome and frustrating for beginners. Combos, team attacks, and throwing also increase strategic play and are essential for besting the game's opportunistic AI. You trigger combos by attacking the same enemy in succession, which lets you quickly dispatch foes because it raises the damage rate. You'll also score extra goodies by filling a bonus gauge with each successful combo string. Team attacks, meanwhile, are specials that are initiated when you have characters placed near an attacking ally, and these grant you such a great combat boost if you pull them off consecutively that they're absolutely vital against powerful enemies. Throwing adds a refreshing dimension to the battle system by letting you lift and toss characters; this is useful for accessing hard-to-reach areas and can even be used to manipulate enemies by combining them to create a more formidable foe. Disgaea boasts a remarkable amount of customization and depth due to its item world and dark assembly. The item world encourages you to level your favorite items by clearing dungeon floors within them, which grants you access to the specialist characters inside. Specialists increase the stats of their item depending on their class; for instance, a dietician increases a character's HP whereas a coach increases speed, plus its based off the anime and this game is awesome for rpg fans.

The turn-based gameplay seems best suited to a handheld console like the DS, and a slew of new features have been added to the basic Disgaea forumula, like multiplayer and bonus characters. For those that enjoy franchises like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea is a sure thing. It's relatively simple, fast-paced, and offers dozens of character classes with which to do battle. The only observable fault is that much of the voice-acting and music has been removed or altered from the original title. AMAZING GAME ON THE D.S. Classical, fun, stimulating, and a awesome story line that appeals to both genders! The game has amazing graphics in my opinion, and just like the game! same voices, music, storyline,so your never short one thing!!!!!!! AMAZING! IF YOU WANT A GAME THAT WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD! PLAY DISGAEA! YOU HAVEN'T LIVED TIL YOU PLAYED IT! I would recommend anyone to try it. Game that never get's boring and something you won't find usually. High ranked game of fun, and so much more to offer. Really Disgaea D.S. is just like the PS2 version, maybe even better because it's now portable!!! More Portable, More Playable
A pretty optimized version of the first Disgaea for the DS. I believe it has nearly everything the original PS2 version has and more, with the exception of voice acting and cutscenes in some parts (I'm playing the bonus 'Etna Mode'). The game cartridge can only hold so much memory, so the sounds and graphics are a bit distorted, but is negligible.
