Released on the one-year anniversary of the Million Man March, GET ON THE BUS follows nearly 20 African Americans as they ride a bus cross-country to attend the historic event in Washington, DC. The passengers--a diverse group of Los Angeles-based men--include a bickering gay couple, a pompous (and disliked) Republican, a Spike Lee-esque film student, a vain actor, and a quarrelsome father and son who are literally shackled to each other by court order. The fascinating and enlightening discussions between the men shed light on numerous issues concerning the African American community and enrich their lives in the process. Lee chose to shoot his film on super-16mm stock, giving it a grainier, more documentary-like feel--which, when combined with the naturalistic performances from the ensemble cast, makes an impact that is all the more immediate. Lee's camera and the actors breathe fervor into Reggie Rock Blythewood's screenplay. Standout performances include Ossie Davis, Charles S. Dutton, Andre Braugher, De'Aundre Bonds, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Richard Belzer (as the white bus driver). Once again Spike Lee delivers a poignant commentary on the state of African American affairs at the end of the 20th century.

Dramedy a la Spike
There's a lot going on in this one--the dialogue, fine performances, the soundtrack, the crazy camera angles, humor, anger, pride, issues with what WEB DuBois' calls "two-ness"--it's hard to pin down one reason why it's so watchable again and again. We can start with the late, great Ossie Davis--one of my acting heroes, as Jeremiah, the senior member of this band of brothers--and the ever delightful Charles Dutton, who has always been a favorite of mine. Andre Braugher plays such a jackass, but such a watchable jackass! He is simply TOO much! The cast is so well rounded (I love Harry Lennix in everything I've seen him in!!!), and the generational play between Davis' character and the young filmmaker, played by Hill Harper is a joy to watch. Anybody can find something in this film to say ... Y'awl Get On The Bus!
Spike Lee accomplished a coup on Get on the Bus. He turned a simple story into a road trip with a lot of heart. And a lotta soul. Watched this with a friend who, like me, missed it back when it was in local theaters-multiplexes. We got so caught up in the story that we did not stir, pause for any reason or even talk. When a story is this intriguing, the world stops. Premise: A group of black men sign up to go from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. to be part of the Million Man March. The main players? The bus driver, an actor, a gay couple, a senior citizen, a father who chained his son to his belt to keep him out of trouble, a man who changed his life through a new religion, a silent man, a police detective and more. What begins as a fun road trip for a cause turns into a quest ... Spike Lee accomplished a coup on Get on the Bus. He turned a simple story into a road trip with a lot of heart. And a lotta soul. Like many Spike Lee stories, the beginning is the set-up from which the story slowly evolves. The second act takes them through not only middle America, but through a tortuous road from being mere flip-glib posturing, two-dimensional characters into fully fleshed out people who almost leap off the screen. The third act takes place at journey's end, but not exactly where they planned. This one, like other Spike Lee productions, is cause for late night drinks and conversation dealing with imagery, dialog and emotions. With few distracting FX, the story must stand on its own to capture the viewer's attention and their allegiance. Get on the Bus is one of those rare films. Would I buy it for friends? In a minute!

It's Perfect..No complaints and the Commentary was just as Good as the Film!!!
