I thought this movie was a lot better than other movies that I had seen in the past. I feel that an effort was made to be somewhat truthful concerning the events and plight of the Apache people. However, this movie, just like all of the others made by Hollywood, fails to deliver a complete picture of the true story of the incidents and provocations by both sides in this matter. The time is 1886, and Geronimo is on the warpath. The Apache have been pushed and moved all over the place and they are fighting for their lives, and their homeland. Their struggle is not unlike the same struggles of many other indigenous people who have been displaced, by what the winners call progress, and the losers call something completely different. As the white settlers moved west, they took large expanses ... I thought this movie was a lot better than other movies that I had seen in the past. As the white settlers moved west, they took large expanses of land. Their idea was that it was theirs for the taking, not caring that it already belonged to others. The Apache had no land office or deeds. As the Indians fought back, they were seen and depicted in the news of the time as wild savages. Many of them were. Many killed anything white, with a brutality never before seen. The level of the brutality wrought on the Indians by the settlers was never accurately described. The resulting "eye-for-an-eye" justice only resulted in everyone being left blinded! The reservation system was administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Overwhelmingly, these men were the cruelest, most corrupt, most cold-blooded pieces of scum that ever drew breath. There were many good people too, but this was a position where the ultimate goal was for the Indians to disappear. For decades the Indians were systematically killed, cheated, starved, and lied to. When the Indian Wars erupted, we all were taught in American History that the Indians were 100% the bad guys. This isn't true. The Army and settlers were equally wrong, and returned brutality to the American Indian just as badly as he had dished out. The biggest difference was that there were a finite number of Indians, and an unending stream of settlers. History has taught us that overwhelming numbers of people and technology always win. This too was the story of Geronimo. Forced to live on the Turkey Creek Reservation, Geronimo was like a ticking time bomb. When open revolt erupted, the Army reacted with unnecessary force, but Geronimo used this as an excuse to leave the reservation. He was a brilliant guerrilla fighter, but he was also a hothead who would have eventually jumped the reservation without provocation. He and his renegades slaughtered hundreds of settlers, including women and children, while on their rampage. Brig. Gen. George Crook, 1st Lt. Charles Gatewood, 2nd Lt. Britton Davis, and Chief of Scouts Al Sieber were all critical players in the Geronimo story. In Geronimo's own words, these men although adversaries, were all honorable and respected men. When Geronimo and what was left of his band finally surrendered, they were all sent to Florida for what was to be two years. They were promised release after then with forty acres of land and a mule. This again, was just another lie. General Crook and 1st Lt. Gatewood were both banished to obscurity. Al Siever, who had hunted Geronimo for years, died defending him, and 2nd Lt. Davis resigned from the U.S. Army. He wrote in his memoirs that both he and Gatewood had been ordered to lie to Geronimo about the land deal by Brig. Gen Nelson Miles, and he called the Army and the U.S.Government's actions despicable.

I LOVED HOW REALISTIC THE WHOLE THING WAS DONE, VERY TASTEFULLY DONE, AND MY ONLY PROBLEM WAS IN HOW THEY DIDNT SHOW HOW GERONIMO WAS DOWNTRODDEN INTO DESPAIR AND ALCOHOLISM FROM BEING ROBBED OF HIS DIGNITY. THERE WAS LITTLE MENTION OF HOW THE US GOVERNMENT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF SO MANY APACHE PEOPLE BECAUSE OF MOVING THEM AWAY FROM THEIR TRADITIONAL FOODS AND MEDICINES. IT IS A TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE THAT NOTHING IN REPARATIONS HAS EVER BEEN DONE TO RESTORE THE DIGNITY OF APACHE OF ANY OTHER NATIVE PEOPLES. Gerinimo was great
I decided to buy this movie because my husband had been searching everywhere trying to find it. So I got on Ebay because I knew they would have to have one. He has watched it over and over again and really enjoys it.

Duvall/Hackman Movie That Didn't Happen
This movie was interesting as far as Indian history, but I would have liked to have seen more about the different characters involved. There were several big name stars but the script did not bring their characters to life or develop them up to the standards expected, especially from Robert Duvall and Gene Hackman.
