Good feature set, fast Wi-Fi speeds.
It was definitely an improvement over my older router, which frequently dropped signal with any Apple products in the house. It is quite large and doesn't have a stand to reduce the footprint on the desk, but has a pretty cool look to it. My particular model does make a humming noise when transferring heavy traffic on Wi-Fi, but I'm not the only one. Having used Netgear before, I was familiar with the feature set of the online interface and it isn't very difficult to protect your network, turn on MAC filtering, and other settings. I do wish it was compatible with various VPN providers so that I could enable it for all connected devices. Great router supporting WAP for those shifting from cableTV to streamer devices like ROKU
This is a powerful router and a great value. It supports Wireless->Ethernet Bridge aka 'wireless Access Point'. This is a critical feature for those who are cutting out cable tv and shifting to over-the-top streaming devices like ROKU. For max performance, you want your streaming terminals connected by ethernet and not wirelesss. But in order to use smartphone apps like Chrome-cast and the Roku remote-control app, both phone & roku must be on the same subnet. Same for printing from your phone - the printer also has to be on the same subnet. This is a pnp limitation. The solution is to bridge your wireless router (that your phones must use) to your wired ethernet router via the AP mode. This means that your wireless devices are transparrently bridged to the ethrenet router so all DHCP ... This is a powerful router and a great value. Extremely easy to set up
About 2 minutes from start to finish to set this router up. I didn't need their Genie program with my Mac. Just found the router name in the Network preference application and entered the provided password. Instantly connected. I had had some issues with my Apple router. Wjhile it was still showing as connected, it wouldn't surf the net. The NetGear has corrected that problem. My only issue with NetGear was with a different model I purchased for home and couldn't get it set up. Had to call their technical support department. After several hours of attempting to work with someone whose accent made it almost impossible for me to understand, they finally replaced that unit. NetGear, get your technical support back to the USA where it belongs. That one issue would make me think twice about ... About 2 minutes from start to finish to set this router up. Fast but some drawbacks
The fastest wired ports of most routers in any price range, but it would be great to have 8 ports instead of 4 - as I could really care less about wi-fi performance. Setting up open ports was a bit of a challenge - finally got them to work after pulling AC power from the router to reboot it, as soft reboots did not take. USB 3.0 port on the front is not easy to get to. Network attached storage seems to have lots of issues when attempting to do a simple file transfer between PC's within the local network....shouldn't be so difficult, as I have still not seen files within folders make the transistion successfully. Works and seems reliable, wifi good enough for four concurrent Netflix streams
I have a 150 Mbps download connection speed from my internet service provider, and with this device I can get all 150 Mbps in connection speed tests over wireless. My kids can also use two Kindle Fire tablets and two phones to watch Netflix or Netflix and Youtube all at the same time in most of my house without any problems. I don't have to restart the router at all, either. This is my second one of this model, and the first one has been in service for two years so far with no problems. I bought a second one and installed it inside a room with stone walls, the stone walls make the wireless signal from the first box too weak. On the downside, the box rates maximum possible 802.11n speeds of 600 Mpbs, maximum 802.11ac connection speeds of 1300 Mbps, and wired connection speeds of 1 ... When I move files between computers over the wired connections, I consistently get near the 1 Gbps in data throughput. From wired to wireless, or wireless to wired, I can't break 200 Mbps on a single connection over 802.11n or 400 Mbps on a single connection over 802.11ac even with the wireless device one foot from the router. That's plenty for gaming or streaming video, but I paid for 600 / 1300 and I'm irritated that I don't get it.
