Product Information

Watch the PBS program based on The Ascent of Money . Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of finance, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance. Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot, lucre, moolah, readies, the wherewithal: Call it what you like, it matters. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, it's the sinews of war. To revolutionaries, it's the chains of labor. But in The Ascent of Money , Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress. What's more, he reveals financial history as the essential backstory behind all history. Through Ferguson's expert lens familiar historical landmarks appear in a new and sharper financial focus. Suddenly, the civilization of the Renaissance looks very different: a boom in the market for art and architecture made possible when Italian bankers adopted Arabic mathematics. The rise of the Dutch republic is reinterpreted as the triumph of the world's first modern bond market over insolvent Habsburg absolutism. And the origins of the French Revolution are traced back to a stock market bubble caused by a convicted Scot murderer. With the clarity and verve for which he is known, Ferguson elucidates key financial institutions and concepts by showing where they came from. What is money? What do banks do? What's the difference between a stock and a bond? Why buy insurance or real estate? And what exactly does a hedge fund do? This is history for the present. Ferguson travels to post-Katrina New Orleans to ask why the free market can't provide adequate protection against catastrophe. He delves into the origins of the subprime mortgage crisis. Perhaps most important, The Ascent of Money documents how a new financial revolution is propelling the world's biggest countries, India and China, from poverty to wealth in the space of a single generation--an economic transformation unprecedented in human history. Yet the central lesson of the financial history is that sooner or later every bubble bursts--sooner or later the bearish sellers outnumber the bullish buyers, sooner or later greed flips into fear. And that's why, whether you're scraping by or rolling in it, there's never been a better time to understand the ascent of money.

"Naturally, financial regulators are eager to pounce, but there is a possibility that they will misdiagnose what went wrong and impose measures that create as many problems as they solve. Before regulators throw block trades, bond swaps, bridge financing, butterfly spreads and Black-Scholes out with the bathwater, they should find time to read Niall Ferguson's The Ascent of Money." • The lengths people have gone to for money

Reading some financial history or watching YouTube videos on the subject is recommended before tackling this book. It isn't a step-by-step narrative of how gold became valued, how interest began or anything like that. It's more a string of historical vignettes that make for interesting stories within themselves. Quite illuminating to someone new to the real of financial history.

  • Niall Nails It

A very engaging overview of Money and Financial Instruments for everyone to read. Lots of interesting history, tales of risk, adventure, the winning of spectacular fortunes, with many larger than life characters, from the Rothschilds to the Medici bankers of the middle ages. Written in easy reading English, not overly technical or esoteric, I hope I can get my kids to read the book. Worth buying and reading. 5 Stars.

  • The Ascent of Money

After seeing Dr. Ferguson on a financial interview, put this book on my "READ NEXT" list. For all who wish to understand what has happened to the monetary system globally, how and why it happened, and what is needed to work through the problems the economies of the world face, this book is MANDATORY. Dr. Ferguson takes us through the evolution of money itself, showing how it has been used, abused, destroyed, and then re-invented. This work is not just anonother of the many 'fixing things once-and-for-all, happily-ever-after' fantasy peices. Rather it is a magnificent work illustrating what money systems have been in the past, what they are now, and why the remedies being now proposed by politicos are doomed to fail. Woven into the work are the bits and peices which point the path to ...

  • Great book ! Highly recommneded

Very good book, based on historical facts, interesting to read especially when you are into banking, finance etc. the book takes you through the entire history of finance, money etc. in a very exciting way, typically for ferguson its written in very reader- friendly style so even poeple who does not understand how banking system works will be able to make most of this book. Higly recommnded.

  • The book was delivered quickly.

The Ascent of Money is be best PBS special/documentary ever. I watched it 3 times and since purchased this incredible book, same title. Suggest you follow up with Ferguson's The Great Degeneration. The two books may help you prepare for our upcoming world economic calamity, & the word prepare is used loosely. Ronnie
