Product Information

Reporter Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) is fired from her job by an unscrupulous newspaper tycoon and retaliates by printing a fake suicide note to the editor signed by a fictional "John Doe." The letter is picked up by the public as a rallying point, as Mr. Doe claimed to be so distraught by the problems of society that he'd rather end his own life in protest. But the tycoon uses the publicity as part of a secret plan, hiring a down-on-his-luck unemployed man (Gary Cooper) to impersonate Doe--establishing him as an American symbol and creating a new political movement in the process. Frank Capra's endearing classic also stars the great character actors Walter Brennan and James Gleason.

An outstanding piece of Americana, directed by Frank Capra, starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. A movie that is every bit the equal of Capra's other masterworks, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, and MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON. In an effort to raise newspaper ratings,a just-fired columnist (portrayed by Barbara Stanwyck) for the paper writes one last column, a fake letter of outrage to the paper, by an anonymous man who says he will commit suicide by jumping off the roof of city hall on Christmas Eve "in protest against political corruption and the state of civilization", that is so popular that the paper hires the columnist back, and hires a man (Gary Cooper) to pretend to be the "John Doe" who supposedly wrote the letter. A movie of enduring meaning, in the age of Ross Perot, Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, Barack Obama, and others who pose as "Washington outsiders", posturing to clean up Washington and finally represent the average American. A cautionary and uplifting tale, of the enduring American spirit. Highly recommended. Somehow this movie is overlooked when listing the classic Hollywood films.

On a par with the movie, It's a Wonderful Life
Feeling sad at Christmas? This is the antidote. Want to feel proud of being an American? This is the movie. Excellent acting from all the leads. The baseball pantomime scene is joyful.

Enjoyable drama movie
Meet John Doe is most definitely enjoyable. I really enjoyed Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck's performances in this great drama film.
