I've always liked this film, esp as it is said to have taken place on Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia, Canada. I myself am from Cape Breton, and it was always a matter of pride that this excellent film was about my home. The art directors of this film were brilliant. They found parts of Monterey, California which looked very much like Cape Breton. The research involved was amazing. Kudos to them. The acting, especially by Jane Wyman, is excellent, as is the acting by the rest of the cast members. But the story itself is the real reason to watch this film. A story about a kindly Doctor, who helps a deaf mute, is moving in its' simplicity. And yet, the fact that she was raped by a local rake, and becomes pregnant by him, showed an adult touch not often seen in a Hollywood film of the ... Some aspects of this film were dead on, while others were incorrect, but this doesn't matter in the over all aspect of this movie. The fact that no homes or stores in Cape Breton were ever on stilts, nor that Halifax never resembled a Hollywood back lot big city doesn't matter. Neither do the correct things matter. Does it matter that that the "fiddle" music is a huge part of Cape Breton culture? No, it doesn't, as the story is compelling in itself. A masterful blending of the specific and the general. Modern film makers could learn from this. All in all, this is one film that I could and have watched, time and time again. And not just because it concerns Cape Breton. Great and wonderful movie. One of the very best.
Great addition to my growing movie collection. This is a movie I have wanted in my collection for many years. Now I have it - excellent condition DVD.

Johnny Belinda, great movie.
It's a very good movie. Jane Wyman plays the part of a deaf girl. She's very smart, even though she is deaf and cannot speak. It's a drama. I don't want to give too much away. I enjoyed it so very much. Well worth the money. I haven't had time, but I'm going to watch it again.
