The AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED VR for Nikon is a very versatile and advanced FX lens. It has a standard zoom with vibration reduction (VR) II technology and image stabilization. This lens has a zoom coverage that starts from wide angle and goes all the way to medium telephoto. The VR technology on this lens helps deliver high-definition videos and clearer photos. Nikon’s VR technology coupled with image stabilization allows for more handheld shooting that still produces clear images and high-definition video shooting. The Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G VR ED is a multipurpose lens that serves many purposes not just for photography but videography as well. The wide zoom range from wide angle to medium opens a lot of options for composition and perspectives. The lens has a 24mm-wide focal length on FX-format digital single-lens reflex cameras and 36mm for DX formats. This makes the lens a good choice for landscapes, travel, group shots, and interior shots. On the other hand, at its longest focal length, 85mm for FX format and 136.5mm for DX formats, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED VR lens is great for interviews, portraits, and close-ups. The AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm has an aperture range of f/3.5 to f/29. It is designed with one extra-low dispersion lens elements that delivers superb color correction and sharpness and three aspherical glass elements, which essentially removes coma and boosts image integrity. The silent wave motor creates for a fast, near-silent, and reliable focusing abilities. When focusing only the internal lens group shifts that helps preserve the lens’s length. Moreover, the Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G VR ED uses a seven-blade round diaphragm, this optical construction for the Nikon NIKKOR 24-85mm results into spherical distortions and chromatic aberrations along the zoom range. Nikon’s specially formulated super integrated lens coating (SIC) increases contrast and controls flares and ghosting. Furthermore, the SIC improves light transmission as well as color consistency on the images. One special feature of the Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G VR ED VR is the ability to switch from auto to manual focus mode by basically just rotating the focus ring. It has a minimum focusing distance of approximately 1.25cm. The lens has a maximum magnification of 3.5x. In addition, this Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm lens is optically constructed using 16 elements in 11 groups. Nikon’s NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G VR ED lens is compatible with just about any Nikon digital camera both DX and FX. It works well with the high-end Nikon cameras such as the D800E, D4, and D800 and even the cheaper ones such as the D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, D40x, and D40. Plus, it also works on autofocus film cameras, such as the N75, N80, F5, F100, and F6. The NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G VR ED Nikon lens measures approximately 3.1 by 3.2 inches and weighs 1.02 pounds. A small barrel comes with a small filter thread.     Excellent Travel Lens with Excellent Vibration Reduction.

    Light-weight lens ideal for travel. Not bulky compared to other zooms. Body is tough with a metal lens mount. Auto-focus hunts a little in low light condition, i.e. in dimly lighted rooms with lens aimed on a light colored-wall, thus, the 4-stars (or 4.5 stars). Otherwise, it is of great value, and the VR is a plus especially for night shots. I have taken sharp photos, hand-held, at 1/4s with VR on. Manual focus is great with very good damping. This lens replaces my previous light-weight travel lenses (28-200G 3.5-5.6D and 28-70/3.5-4.5D). Lens balances well with lightweight or professional bodies. I did not miss focal length in excess of 85mm. I switched to DX if I need anything longer than 85mm. The 24mm is a big plus for narrow streets, and other tight spots. Photos are ...

    Very versatile, high quality lens

    I've had this lens for more than a year now and taken a few thousand pictures with it. It blows my old Tamron zoom completely away. 24-85mm is a huge range. It's just so darn convenient to zoom instead of changing lenses. The color is excellent with only a little aberration noticeable with extreme contrasts. It's certainly bigger and heavier than a point-and-shoot camera, but it delivers the same kind of instant flexibility. The "macro" switch is a little cumbersome and mine broke off after a while. I have other lenses for macros so I put a piece of tape over it and haven't missed it. It takes sharp photos, but certainly not as sharp as my Nikkor 60mm f2.8D macro. My biggest gripe with this lens is the barrel distortion at the wider-angle settings. I can never seem to fully ...

    Great optics, not so great image stabilization durability on my used lens copy

    The VR electronics on a used lens seems to deteriorate over time as in the case of this lens. For every single picture taken with VR on, they came out a little bit soft. Granted, it was only noticeable when fully zoomed in. However, turning VR off under the same conditions even hand held pictures always came out sharp as a tack. The only instance when I used VR was whenever hand holding and the shutter speed was too slow that camera shake would introduce even more blur or softness.

    wonderful light weight lens

    I bought this lens as used excellent condition for good price for my full frame Nikon D610 camera . I think it is great lens for daily photography of portrait street landscape and cityscape as it could be considered as all in one lens for travel photography duo to its lightweight and good built . This lens is fast , sharp and accurate in focusing with a privilege of VR . The main drawbacks for me were related to distortions at the both ends 24mm and 85mm I think this lens is must for any enthusiastic photographer and I highly recommend having it among other specialized expensive lenses

    I love this lens. As crazy as it sounds I didn't think a 20 year old lens would give me such fantastic shots. I picked this up on ebay for under $80.00 and it was worth it. I use it as my everyday lens. It is a lens that I didn't spend a grand on so I allow my kids to use it when they want to photograph things too. There are some cons but every lens has a con right? Now it could be the age of the lens, maybe even that who know how many people have previously owned this lens so who knows the history... But it is very touchy on focusing. I have had to get to know my lenses sweet spot. Sometimes I have to remove the lens and put back on the camera in order for it to focus. It rarely happens but wouldn't trust this lens at any important photo session where it could happen. But I guess since ...
