"To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists, trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage." Thus wrote Joseph Conrad in the opening paragraphs of the story that provides the basis for Ridley Scott's first feature. During the era of the Napoleonic wars, a conflict arises between two of the emperor's cavalry officers when one of them, the aristocratic Lt. D'Hubert (Keith Carradine), is sent by his superior to deliver the message to commoner Lt. Ferraud (Harvey Keitel) that he's to be placed under house arrest for having wounded a man in another duel. Since Ferraud is with a woman at the time, he takes offense at the intrusion and challenges D'Hubert to a duel. Their match, though fierce, is without resolution. Whenever their paths cross, they continue their battle, fighting a series of six duels over the course of 14 years, paralleling Napoleon's major battles of the period. Scott's meditation focuses on the absurd vanity behind the old European code of honor--and the nature of warfare itself. All the distinguishing marks of Scott's later work is already on display here, from the meticulous re-creation of period costume, decor, and behavior to the lush, carefully composed photography.

    The Duellists - outstanding period drama

    This is an outstanding period piece (Napoleonic era) and is a story told in an unusual way - the two protagonists, with an insignificant if not imagined slight between them, fight over their "honor" (the Napoleonic Code dealt heavily with honor, and in some ways this predilection with the past kept France from moving quickly into the modern world). But the story is not so much of the lives of two men -- rather it is told in episodes where their paths cross over the years, and their "unsettled business" becomes a parallel existence. At each of these intersections one learns a bit more of each man, and watches them change – either rising to the challenge or sinking beneath it – and the years pass and their political (and person) environments change as well.     The Duellists (1994)

    This is one of those movies that you watch, and then a while later you watch again and again. Historical Fiction or rather Stylized History based on true events. Not fantasy or sword and sorcery. Accurate depiction of uniforms, weapons and the 'Code of Honor' of the time of Napoleon. There's a plot and an interwoven story unlike todays action films that are action packed unbelieveable slash-em-ups with special effects that defy physics and the laws of nature (what is the risk when the heros die but return from the dead?) Not wall to wall action, but there's enough, and there's suspense in-between the duels. I highly recommend this movie for earth-based viewers. I've had it for years, loaned it out and when it didn't come back bought another from eBay (that's a recommendation).
