It's time once again to slide into those bell-bottoms, slip on a mood ring, and feather back the long hair for some groovy vehicular combat. No, this isn't going to be a sunshine day, and the only thing truly out of sight is your opponent's ride bursting into flames. Welcome to the world of Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense, where rival gangs rule the '70s and futuristic technology has all but guaranteed one explosive showdown across the U.S. of A. This sequel to 1998's Vigilante 8 picks up where the first game left off. The Vigilantes rescued the Southwest from an evil gang called the Coyotes in the winter of 1975. Leader Slick Clyde managed to escape, however, and turned his attention to the terrorist group named OMAR, which began to amass power through questionable practices and shady deals with other countries. After decades of rising through the ranks at OMAR, Clyde was given the title of Lord Clyde, CEO of the world's largest oil supplier. The years weren't kind to Lord Clyde, and by the time he reached the pinnacle of his power, he was little more than a 70-year-old man still embittered by his defeat in the United States. Things started to look a little brighter, however, when he learned of the first successful time travel experiment performed by researchers at Stanford. Now Clyde can forget about the present year (2015) and go back to set things straight! With new technology and the help of his closest operatives, Obake and Dallas 13, he would ensure America fell under the iron grip of OMAR once and for all. Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense marks the return to the vehicular combat found in the original game, which debuted on the PlayStation in 1998. Representing the Vigilantes are Convoy, his wife Houston (who are both missing at the start of the game), John Torque, Sheila, and the All-Star Trio of Tomey, Romey, and Leilah. The band of Coyotes include leader Slick Clyde, special operative Obake, the robotic Dallas 13, smuggler Nina Loco, and thief Molo. Joining the fray are drifters Padre Destino, Agent R. Chase, Astronaut Bob O. and the enigmatic Garbage Man. Each character also drives a unique vehicle that is outfitted with a special weapon, from the Padre's Hades Gate to John Torque's Wheel O' Fortune, and can receive various upgrades by defeating enemy vehicles. The upgrades come in the form of acceleration, speed, armor, and target avoidance, the amount of which depends on the game's difficulty and damage settings. Accumulate enough points and you can outfit your ride with a new chassis! Also along the battlefields are the following weapon power-ups: Interceptor Missiles, Bull's Eye Rockets, Sky Hammer Mortars, Bruiser Cannons, Roadkill Mines, and Brimstone Burners. Besides the weapon power-ups and vehicle upgrades, players can find futuristic technology in the form of propulsion mechanisms, which are designated by one of three icons: Hoverpods, Hydrofloaters, and Skis N' Treads. Depending on the technology found, your vehicle will be able to fly in the air, skim across the water, or plow through the snow without slipping. Also strewn about the levels are four more icons: Shields (which protect you from damage for a limited time); Radar Jammer (temporarily disables enemy homing devices and radar); Weapon Upgrades (temporarily increases the damage of your weapons); and Repair Wrenches (each wrench fixes a portion of your vehicle). The main game is the Quest Mode, which can be played by yourself or with a friend. By choosing a character, you'll advance through the eight stages of the game set around the United States: a harbor in California, a meteor crater in Arizona, the site of the Winter Games in Utah, a bayou in Louisiana, a NASA launch site in Florida, a steel mill in Pennsylvania, a nuclear plant in Minnesota, and even the Alaskan Pipeline! One of the best multiplayer games on the Dreamcast, and the best version.
Originally released in the Playstation as a follow up for the Vigilante 8 - and the original Vigilante 8 being a follow up to the Interstate'76- this car combat game had to fight against heavy competition, with the TM2 and 3, but also with the small fan base that supported the genre. This is the best version released, with tight controls, up to four players at once in the multiplayer modes, wonderful graphics and all the levels from the old V8 game. This game is not a copy of TM2 or 3, they play and fell very different. V8 is more realistic in it graphics, but just as nuts in the physics and weapons. You have 6 normal weapons, and each weapon have 4 different shots, plus the unique specials for each car, and some levels with exclusive weapons. And you can raise the power of every car, with ... Entertaining, but short.
I originally had this game for the N64, and I recently purchased it again for the Dreamcast because I had never beaten it on the 64. I beat it over the weekend, and I must say, it was a vast improvement on the 64 version. Better graphics, better controls, better music, and certain missions were much, much easier to accomplish as well. However, it being a nearly ten-year-old game made it seem a bit dated, short, and somewhat repetitive. I suppose this is just the after-effects of being innundated with deep, long, diverse games such as the GTA series, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Pikmin 1 & 2, Wind Waker, Final Fantasy X, Soul Calibur series, Animal Crossing, Advance Wars, and other such games that I've personally played for fifty hours or more each. A lot of characters, a lot of vehicles, and a ton of replay value if you'd like to level your vehicles up without cheats. I tried it, but eventually it grew tiresome. The survival mode is my favorite by far, if you want to know about gameplay. Get your favorite character, toss him/her into the mix, and kill until you can't. I like most characters, but some are so awful that I can't stand to play them more than once. That's based off of the characters' special weapons, the vehicles' handling, and the tediousness of the quest when all factors are mixed together, but when it comes down to it, my liking/disliking of a character comes down to their special weapons. Here are a few highlights. Coolest special: Chassey Blue. Weirdest special: Padre Destino. Funniest special: Molo. Most effective special: 3 way tie between Houston, Flying All-Star Trio, and Bob O. Coolest yet most useless special: Agent R. Chase. Most fitting special: Convoy. Worst special: Nina Loco. Best special: Flying All-Star Trio. My favorite specials: Sheila, Torque, and Houston. And that's all I can think to say about this game. If you're into it, get it. if not, you may find some enjoyment in it anyway. But if you do get it, make sure it's the Dreamcast version. A lot of headache will be avoided that way.

Quite possibly the best game ever created. It's good enough that i bought a dreamcast just so i could play it. The sound effects, the music and the fast paced action make for a sensational experience(think twisted metal on steroids). A new version of this incredible game has recently been released for xbox 360. "vigilante 8: arcade" If it is ANYTHING like this tremendous classic.. then it's well worth $50. let alone the $10 that it's currently being sold for. I recommend this series with my life.Quite possibly the best game ever created. It's good enough that i bought a dreamcast just so i could play it.
