Baltimore director John Waters's outrageous 1971 debut PINK FLAMINGOS burst onto the filmmaking scene like the ample flesh of its drag-queen star through the seams of a lamé dress. Conceived as a way to garner attention for Waters's fledgling career, this paean to bad taste certainly did just that--so much so that decades later, the film still retains the power to shock with its gleeful demolition of every known human taboo.Waters's attempt at making the most vile and offensive movie ever made is aptly mirrored in his characters' competition for the title of "Filthiest Person Alive." Overweight transvestite and Waters muse Divine (aka Glen Milstead) stars as the current record holder, Babs Johnson, who lives in a trailer park with her trashy friend Cotton (Mary Vivian Pearce), incestuous son Crackers (Danny Mills), and mentally-stunted mother Edie (Edith Massey), who spends her time in a playpen and is obsessed with eggs. Vying for Babs's filthy title is evil middle-class couple Raymond (David Lochary) and Connie Marble (Mink Stole), who fund porno shops, sell heroin to grade-schoolers, and run a white-slave trade that involves kidnapping young women, imprisoning them in their dungeon-like basement, raping and impregnating them, and selling their babies to lesbian couples. In between, there's sex with chickens, whistling rectums, actual fellatio, and canine excrement--ensuring not only gross-out comedy par excellence, but a total assault on bourgeois respectability that rivals the comparatively mild critique of UN CHIEN ANDALOU or L'AGE D'OR. Wow....Very Strange and Very Wrong
This movie is very disturbing. Sure I have seen and enjoyed many Cheezy movies and independent movies too. But, this movie goes beyond cheezy. Its also Pretty much a porno flick for those of you who have not seen the film. It also has its funny in areas to release some of it's discomfort. The simplicity of the story is testament to Waters' gross-out goals. Divine stars as Babs Johnson, the matriarch of a trailer-dwelling family-gang that relishes its tabloid label of "filthiest people alive." Thus infuriates Raymond and Connie Marble (David Lochary and Mink Stole), who feel that their business of kidnapping and impregnating women in order to sell the babies to lesbian couples and their involvement in fronting money to a chain of heroin pushers in the inner-city ... Thus, the movie engages in a constantly escalating battle of one-upmanship, as the two families vie for the coveted title. The home-movie quality of Pink Flamingos enhances the grossest aspects of the film because it gives the viewer the impression that little was done to fictionalize the activity on-screen. Throughout this movie I was so...Awe stricken! I couldn't believe what I was seeing: A man having sex with a woman...and chickens. Goofy villains with red and blue hair...and other areas...The most bizarre birthday party every put on film... male frontal nudity...and singing dense man...and of course the climax...All who have seen it, know what I mean... Although the characters claim to be repulsive, they do have redeeming features - Divine is a devoted mother and daughter. Edith Massey plays the grandmother, also known as the Egg Lady, who sits in a play pen obsessing over eggs; the children are Cotton (Mary Vivian Pearce) and Crackers (Danny Mills) who play sex games with Crackers simultaneously abusing chickens and women while Cotton looks on lustfully. Well, needless to say I was hooked and slightly numb watching this low budget bad dialogue film. I liked the Hollywood stuff...but the underground is the true John Waters! Waters has been quoted as saying if someone vomits at one of his movies, it is like getting a standing ovation...I can't deny that this man is unique. Thanks to my gore friends for mortifying my mine even more. Recommended to those who are curious.

One of the freakiest of the freaky films, The trashiest of the trashy films, do not watch this film if you are NOT a fan of John Waters OTHER films, because you WILL NOT 'GET IT' if you just happen to stumble upon this campy, trashy outrageously 'bad' classic. I am telling you now, you have be warned! To describe this film is rather difficult, it's like trying to describe an acid trip to people who have never taken LSD. This film is virtually unique AND PRACTICALLY A GENRE UNTO ITSELF. WARNING: This is NOT 'Hairspray', ladies! You don't have to be gay to appreciate Divine, possibly world's all-time most outrageous anti-glamour drag queen. He was one of a kind, as is the director and writer the forever fab u lous John Waters. Danger: If you have a weak stomach, you will NOT ... I guarantee it is unlike nearly any other film you will ever see. Give it a shot---IF YOU DARE!

Every taboo packed into one movie!
John Waters finally did it... He finally made one of the most mind-boggling films out there. He succeeded in taking literally every taboo known to man-kind and putting it into one movie, and that one movie is Pink Flamingos. Babs Johnson(Divine) is said to be the filthiest person alive, and will prove it on any count... She eats dog excrement in one scene(actual dog excrement), she gives her son oral sex in another scene, and cannibalizes a bunch of police officers in another scene. This film is seemingly harmless, until you actually watch it. There are several taboos that should have never been put in a movie, that this movie has: incest, cannibalism, castration, oral sex, indecent exposure, beastiality, and foot sex at it's most disturbing. I would caution anyone that sees this ... John Waters finally did it... He finally made one of the most mind-boggling films out there. If you are looking to see a movie that could very well push you to the core of un-comfort, then Pink Flamingos is for you! Be advised, the rating of NC-17 is very deserved for this film.

If you get the chance to see it - Don't. In fact, RUN AWAY (screaming)!
What a horrible movie! I first saw it twenty-some-odd years ago, and it made me physically ill. Ever since, I've warned people that "if you ever get the chance to see it, RUN, SCREAM, Cry if you have to, but DON'T watch it!" ...of course, my brother found the movie raunchily funny, and lost his VHS copy (the same one I watched decades ago). I bought this for his birthday, and when he unwrapped it, it took about 2-minutes before it was in the DVD player. Overall, the film has no redeeming qualities unless you (like my brother) are tickled by raunchy, vulgar scenes in a movie loaded with bad acting, horrible plot, and low production quality due to a shoestring budget. Quintessential John Waters "must see" film. Pink Flamingos put Waters, Divine and the City of Baltimore on the map. Not a feel-good, family friendly or life affirming motion picture...just pure shock and awe for the fun of it!
