This third episode in Capcom's "gothic action" saga serves as a prequel to the first two releases, set before the events of the original Devil May Cry. Though fans of the series know that Dante's supernatural powers are a product of his demonic heritage, this game introduces the hero's half-brother -- another supernaturally gifted half-demon named Virgil, who is just as dedicated to advancing the forces of evil and darkness on Earth as Dante is devoted to promoting justice and good. <br><br>Building upon the fast-paced gameplay offered in earlier editions of Devil May Cry, Dante's Awakening allows players to choose from a selection of fighting styles as they take control of the hero. The "Evasive" style emphasizes Dante's speed and dodging abilities, while the "Close Combat" style allows the hero to make good use of melee skills and the "Long Range" style focuses on gunplay. A collection of new and familiar weapons are available, including quick pistols, powerful shotguns, and even a deadly guitar.

The return of a masterpiece
The storyline in this game is based around Dante trying to kill his evil twin brother , Vergil. A gigantic dark tower appears right near Dante's house , and Vergil is on top of it. He has some sort of sinister plan that has to do with the tower and Dante must stop him. Now on to the gameplay itself. Once you lose , you have to start from the beginning of the level , unless you buy a certain item in the game that prevents that, and once you use it , you have to buy a new one , since it's not permanent. Also , the enemies and bosses in this game are hard. They're all very cool , but also tough , especially the bosses. The combat system in this game is also great. You have 4 fighting styles in this game, that gives much variety to the combat in the game, and every one of them grants you some ... They are: Trickster- this style lets you dodge enemy attacks much easier than you normally do. You can do things like running on walls , dashing to the sides , etc; Swordmaster- this enhances your ability to use melee weapons. You can do things like throw your sword at enemies, stab them with it in lightening-fast speeds, and so on. This is also my favorite style; Gunslinger-enhances your ability to use guns . You can do things like shoot your guns in two different directions, spin your shotgun around and fire it , etc; Royalguard-lets you block enemy attacks , and then release them back at them by punching them with all the energy you build up in you from their attacks. So as you can see, there is much variety to the fighting. You can pull off some amazing combos, not to mention you have many weapons , melee and long ranged alike. Your ranged weapons will include a pair of handguns with a rapid rate of fire, a shotgun , a bazooka , and two others. Also , if you keep using a certain style, it'll eventually level up. All of these attributes combine to form an awesome game that should not be missed.

The game follows the journey of the half human, half demon, Dante, as he battles his way through a Gothic tower that spontaneously erected in front of his demon hunting shop. Responsible for this tower is his twin brother, Vergil who is working with a demonic human named Arkham to harness the power of Dante and Vergil's sealed demon father Sparda. Along the way Dante acquires new guns and blades via killing off bosses and light treasure hunting, and upgrades his style by killing off enemies. The important things to know about this game are ... The important things to know about this game are that the story, while over the top, is solid, the game play is some of the best on the ps2 and that the game is UN-MERCILESSLY HARD. Dante himself is the man. He's cocky and brash without being a schmuck, has one-liners that are Arnold Schwarzenegger worthy, and he oozes cool. There are segments in the cut scenes where he performs over the top action like riding on a RPG blast, killing people in mid air with a motorcycle wielded like a pair of nun chucks and can even in-game jump on his enemies while on the ground and ride on them like a skateboard. In short, he is arguable the best part of the story. The rest of the cast is good, and while not mentioned in detail here, are used to round out the story well. The game play has the player using the square button for his guns, triangle for his swords, and circle for his style based attacks (either gun-slinger, sword master, trickster and royal guard to start with). In each battle, the player has to continuous succeed each move performed with a different move to raise his style meter that is shown on screen. If the player has enough demon energy, he can use his devil trigger and go ape on everything on screen with enhanced speed and power. The game play is extremely fluid at 60 fps and quite addictive. Devil May Cry 3 is hard, like in the top 5 hardest games of all time hard, right there with Ikaruga and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. The game, while fair, does not hold back in destroying the player. This is due to the fact that the Japanese Hard setting for the game is the default US Normal setting. Meaning you're going to get you're ass handed to you a lot. Also there are no continues on death, only repeating the level from the beginning. At the same time though, the constant defeat leads to more skill, which will make you a better player. The game takes time and effort to master. ***If you're looking into this game, know that you are in for one hell of a ride. The game is a blast, has sublime game play that rivals that of 2010's Bayonetta, and one of the coolest characters in video games period. The game is really, really hard, so if daunted by the challenge and not a glutton for punishment, check out the Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition of the game that has additional easier difficulties and better check points. If you're a fan of Hack and Slash games(ex. God of War), combo based fighting games (including Super Smash Bros), Over the Top Japanese style, and aren't afraid of a challenge, it's perfect for you.

Capcom's Devil May Cry series made a big splash on the PS2. The first game reinvented the whole action genre. The excellent combo system and fluid mechanics made gamers feel like they were in an action movie. The first title also included RPG character customization elements mixed with a tiny bit of puzzle solving. Add in a cool character and you've got a winner. With such a good formula many wonder how Capcom could have messed up so badly with Devil May Cry 2. Granted it wasn't the worse game of the year, it just wasn't even close to as good as the first game. Gamers were expecting more and they got less. Instead of scrapping the entire Devil May Cry franchise Capcom is giving it another chance with Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. This time around they went back to the basics of what ... A great game! very challenging.
I am still playing this game. The first two were quite a challenge but this one is a little bit harder for me. It has many levels and secret levels to keep a person occuppied. I think the only down play to the game is the hokey cutscenes and ridiculous banter and one liners. There are a couple of levels that are very dark and little difficult to navigate but they become pretty easy to figure out. I wish it had the left analog pan in every scene but that is only available in certain parts and very limited at that. I am truly enjoying playing and can't wait til I have more time off to play some more.I am still playing this game. The first two were quite a challenge but this one is a little bit harder for me. Not for the faint of heart, for those who like a challenge.
I had purchased this game because I wanted a challenge, and boy was I not disappointed. Devil May Cry 3 (the original version) has the reputation of being one of the hardest games on the PlayStation 2... it keeps that reputation intact. Even on the easy difficulty setting, it is quite easy to end up dying. Prepare for a little bit of frustration if you are not adept at these style of fighting games because if you are not prepared, this game will chew you up and spit you out. It gets easier as you go along the game due to the fact that you get better equipment and skills and you understand the game in general better.I had purchased this game because I wanted a challenge, and boy was I not disappointed. Devil May Cry 3 (the original version) has the reputation of being one of the hardest games on the PlayStation 2... it keeps that reputation intact.
