A visually hypnotizing cinematic feat, RUSSIAN ARK is Alexsandr Sokurov's spellbinding ode to St. Petersburg's State Hermitage Museum. Shot in one fluid take using High Definition video cameras, the photography floats and careens through the lavish corridors of the museum, examining its architectural details while following a dreamlike plot. A cast of 867 actors supply the action of the film, whether dancing the mazurka in a lively ballroom, performing a military salute, or watching a theater performance. The Marquis (Sergey Dreiden), an aged but limber European dressed in solid black, is the film's charismatic guide, leading the narrator--who is the unidentified voice behind the camera--through each doorway and into each gallery in a sweeping tour of the Hermitage. While the Marquis interacts with some of the guests, debating about Italian art with a couple of Russian scholars, delighting over rich paintings by Rubens and Van Dyck with an angelic blind woman, taking a lively brunette for a spin on the dance floor, others do not see him. Even the narrator suspects that the Marquis is a ghost, long dead and wandering the Hermitage in a quest to better understand history. Time periods, indicated by style of dress, fluctuate between the 1700s and the present. Famous Russian figures, such as Peter the Great, Nicholas I, and Catherine the Great appear and then disappear, with no explanation of their roles. Between the Marquis and the narrator, confusion reigns. They are spectators and trespassers in this mysterious space, trying to find their way.

A must see film.
Well, where to begin. There just aren't enough proper adjectives to describe this film. Sumptuous. Breathtaking. I don't care if your boyfriend hates subtitles. So get comfy on the couch, crack open that tub of Chocolate Haagen Daz and be magically transported to another time, another world.

Russian Ark : One Take!!!
I really liked Russian Ark. It proudly sits in my collection. That the movie is one continuous shot is amazing. The costumes and music is beautiful. The movie is about a guy, the narrator, who wakes up and finds himself at the Hermitage in the 1700's. You don't know how he got there. Is he dead? Is he dreaming? As he walks the rooms he travels through time via the Hermitage. As he goes through rooms you see Catherine the Great, The Romanov's, protecting the art during WWII, present day. Just to name a few. The movie is a little slow but I think the idea is great. I think if people do not like it, a bit of the problem is not knowing the history of Russia. The movie does take for granted that you know who the major players in Russian history are so you can immediatly tell who the narrator ... I really liked Russian Ark. A trip to the Palace
yes to the entertainment and characters but at times also boring.......I think a limited audience that enjoys this .

One of the most visually beautiful movies.
I originally saw this film in a theater in San Francisco and instantly fell in love with it. While the story is a little hard to follow, and tends to veer of somewhat, the narrator and guide are quick to explain what we are witnessing so anyone outside of Russia can understand what is going on. There are some drawn out parts that only an art lover would enjoy (long scenes sweeping through different galleries in the Hermitage put my husband to sleep) but otherwise a highly inventive and beautiful executed work.I originally saw this film in a theater in San Francisco and instantly fell in love with it.
