Auschwitz-Birkenau is the site of the largest mass murder in human history. Yet its story is not fully known. In Auschwitz , Laurence Rees reveals new insights from more than 100 original interviews with Auschwitz survivors and Nazi perpetrators who speak on the record for the first time. Their testimonies provide a portrait of the inner workings of the camp in unrivalled detail--from the techniques of mass murder, to the politics and gossip mill that turned between guards and prisoners, to the on-camp brothel in which the lines between those guards and prisoners became surprisingly blurred. Rees examines the strategic decisions that led the Nazi leadership to prescribe Auschwitz as its primary site for the extinction of Europe's Jews--their "Final Solution." He concludes that many of the horrors that were perpetrated in Auschwitz were driven not just by ideological inevitability but as a "practical" response to a war in the East that had begun to go wrong for Germany. A terrible immoral pragmatism characterizes many of the decisions that determined what happened at Auschwitz. Thus the story of the camp becomes a morality tale, too, in which evil is shown to proceed in a series of deft, almost noiseless incremental steps until it produces the overwhelming horror of the industrial scale slaughter that was inflicted in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.

    Auschwitz, a new history

    This is my first book on the holocaust. It is very well written and easy to follow. Not only does the author bring these experiences to life, but also gives the reader an understanding on how such things could take place. Highly recommended!

    Auschwitz it was amazing

    Thee book is amazing I love it it has a lot of history of the concentration camp i would definitely recommend this book and there were no cons in my opion!! Its an awesome book so 4 stars for me

    AUSCHWITCZ

    In depth look at how this horrific camp came about and became Hitler's worst killing machine. A gruesome reminder that despots like Hitlerr, Stalin, Idi Amin and the Tutsi rulers in Rwanda exact far more horrific murder than we Americans can imagine on our worst day. Control of the news media is the ally of these despots, and, lest we forget, we see our press more and more controlled here in America by a left leaning morality and philosophy. Which side do you think Hitler and Stalin stood on? Beware the liberal!!

    A real revelation of Nazi Germany

    Outstanding background of Naziism and the concentration and death camps. Many eyewitnesses from survivors as well as perpetrators.

    Outstanding Book!

    Well written and flows well. Interesting information to me and I've studied this subject for at least 40 years. Want a good book with good facts that is easy to read? THIS is that book! I don't think you will be disappointed at all.
