An excellent book for academics and the interested
ESSENTIAL BUDDHISM encompasses the legend of the birth of Buddhism’s founder, Siddhartha Gautama and his journey to enlightenment which led to the founding of Buddhism in 531 BC. The book then covers an extensive history of this 2500 year old religion, including the various factions of the faith and the individuals who played an important part in them. The second part of the book entails Buddhism’s surprisingly recent foray into the United States and some conjecture on its future here. Maguire’s history of Buddhism in the America’s is especially interesting in light of the legend of a 5th-century Buddhism monk who traveled to Mexico. The lack of hard evidence not withstanding, this is a historical note that begs investigation beyond the “Guatama-la” and “Maya-n” Indians. ... Unfortunately, these details are buried by more than 1500 years. A great deal of the first part of Essential Buddhism intertwines the history with the beliefs of the faith. Maguire calls upon the events which led to “The Four Noble Truths” and “The Nobel Eightfold Path,” which gives credence to these beliefs. Any Christian who scoffs at Siddhartha’s revelations needs to look more closely at his/her own faith and the Old Testament teachings from God to the prophets, Moses going up empty-handed and coming down with tablets of stone – twice! – as well as the many angelic and divine messages given to those in the New Testament stories. The chapters on “The Three Vehicles of Buddhism” go into great detail on the Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana disciplines. As this is the “Essential” Guide to Buddhism, these details make sense, but to a non-Buddhist – even one studying the faith – the chapter read a lot like a non-Christian being told in great detail the difference between being a Baptist, a Methodist and a Presbyterian. Yes, they are different but no, it’s not all that interesting! The chapter on “Buddhist Beliefs” was the most valuable in understanding Buddhism. Much of my knowledge comes from the entertainment field, new-age hipsters and the understanding that “what goes around, comes around,” “as we reap, so shall we sow” and the school-yard threat that “we’re gonna get what’s coming to us” is all wrapped in the Buddhism belief of karma. This chapter enlightened me, if I may use that word, as to the core beliefs of Buddhism. Essential Buddhism is an excellent guide to anyone interested in the story of Buddhism, it’s beliefs and practices and some theories on what the future holds for Buddhism in the United States.

Essential Buddhism
The condition of the book was as advertised and was mailed quickly. I purchased the book for a class I am taking at the community college for a non-credit class that has began yet, Therefore I have not began to read the material inside.
