A prosperous and influential Kentucky plantation owner in the 1850s, Hinson was devoted to raising his growing family and working his land. Yet by 1865, Hinson had likely killed more than one hundred men and had single-handedly taken down an armed Union transport in his one-man war against Grant's army and navy. By the end of the Civil War, the Union had committed infantry and cavalry from nine regiments and a specially equipped amphibious task force of marines to capture Hinson, who was by that time nearly sixty years old. They never caught him. Since then, the story of Jack Hinson has evaded astute historians, and until now, he has remained invisible in the history of sniper warfare. John S. "Old Jack" Hinson watched the start of the Civil War with impartial disinterest. A friend of Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate officers alike, Hinson was opposed to secession, focused instead on his personal affairs. After a unit of Union occupation troops moved in on his land and summarily captured, executed, and placed the decapitated heads of his sons on his gateposts, however, Hinson abandoned his quiet life for one of revenge. Picture of life in the civil war
The biggest reason I totally enjoyed the book--my husband and myself worked with the great-great-grandson of Jack Hinson for a number of years, BUT we didn't know about this until he passed this summer. Also we live in this immediate area and didn't have any knowing of the history surrounding us. It is a great read and resonates deeply living in the area. I recommend this read highly as it paints a picture of live from that time period. We cannot imagine life then but realize this country is in another empass and rings it true. Should be required reading for ALL students in ALL schools !
McKenney's 15 years of research have paid off in a superb & accurately documented account of the Southern Family during the Civil War. As was typical of this war, the history of the vanquished has been being written by the victors. You can find that version in the public schools, hollywood, and on NPTV/NPR - AFTER - its been edited, of course ! Moreover, he did it without having to portray anyone as this or that - just refer to his footnotes, military archives, and local periodicals of the day. Can anyone document what Jack Hinson may have actually thought? Or sometimes said, not always. But what Jack Hinson DID is a matter of record and speaks for itself. By the way, what the union army DID is on record too. But, like today, those in charge, in power, rarely give you that ... As a young 10-year old boy, my grandfather used to supplement his blacksmith apprenticeship by taking wagonloads of Northern and Southern tourists out to the Battlefields around Chattanooga. And in his 80s he would regale this grandson with fascinating and heartrending stories that he listened to from both sides. It is from this heritage that, even without McKinney's documentation, his preservation of history has that ring of truth written all over it !

Monotonous waste of time.
I am a military historian with a personal library of several hundred volumes. I read over half this book before filing it away in my "waste of time" section. The author has taken what would have been an interesting subject and turned it into a marathon attempt to stretch a short story into a book. The "book" goes into detail about unnecessary and uninteresting background information. I don't care about which soldiers stole whose chickens! I've read too much of this nonsense and still haven't gotten to anything interesting about Jack Hinson or any atrocities that caused him to become a confederate sniper. The relevant content of this book could be included in a magazine article!I am a military historian with a personal library of several hundred volumes. Magnificently told, Expertly researched and documented
This is one book that I honestly hated to have come to an end. The author has you feeling like you know the Hinson's and the entire community that comprise the Land between the rivers. This is one fantastic book and I can not recommend it enough to anyone that has a love of the history of the war of Northern Aggression. I pass through this area when I travel to see my daughter and grand kids. I will be stopping to see some of the area that are written about. There is a chapter just for those wishing to see the areas discussed today and I will be using that to see these areas for myself. One can do this when they are retired;) I would absolutely LOVE to speak with the Author. Civil War educational book. Fantastic!!
I live in Tennessee and never heard of Jack Hinson. Great Civil War history book. Author did a though background on this man. Great read.
