Product Information

"Lee Surrenders!" "President Murdered!" "Booth Killed!" screamed the headlines of American newspapers in April 1865, leaving little room for mention of a maritime disaster that to this day is America's worst. On April 27, 1865, the Sultana, a 260-foot, wooden-hulled steamboat-smaller than the Titanic but carrying more passengers-exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. More than 1,800 men, mostly Union soldiers on their way home from Confederate prison camps, died. On board were over 2,400 passengers-six times the ship's legal capacity. Although jubilant about the war's end, most of the men were weakened by malnutrition and disease from their imprisonment at Andersonville and Cahaba. Hundreds who were not killed in the explosion drowned in the cold, swift waters of the muddy river. Because of the timing of the sinking, coverage of the Sultana's demise was scant, and the tragedy has passed almost unnoticed in the pages of American history. In this highly documented book, author Jerry Potter focuses on how greed, indifference, gross stupidity, and criminal misconduct reaching as far as the White House led to the overloading of the Sultana at Vicksburg. Such irresponsible conduct characterized the actions of President Lincoln, an entire chain of army command, and several profit-hungry civilians. This authoritative work contains abundant photographs and illustrations, as well as the most complete list of the ship's passengers available.

  • A must read for any Civil War or history buff!

An excellently done narrative of a very under appreciated historic event at the conclusion of the Civil War. A combination of poor planning, stupidity and heroism that all took place as this extremely overloaded paddle wheeler with a boiler repair that should not have been permitted. But the boat sailed with some 2,000 former prisoners of war coming home - weak, emaciated, and many unable to swim, even if they knew how; it should not have happened...but it did. More loss of life than the Titanic 60 years later, but hardly even mentioned in history - the assassination of Lincoln and the end of hostilities took all the major headlines, and the 1,600 souls who lost their lives to the explosion, fire or the cold water of the Mississippi deserved better...

  • Excellent review from a descendent

My great-great-grandfather fought for the North in the 3rd Tennessee Calvary as a private. He was captured, sent to the Cahaba POW camp, endured hardships there, and, at the end of the war, was placed on the Sultana where he died. He never made it home and left a wife and two small girls. I've often wondered how she made it and the strength she must have had to carry on. This book does an extraordinary job of explaining the disaster and filled in a lot of holes for me. It's too bad that more Americans don't know about the Sultana and what led up to April 27th, 1865. Highly recommended!

  • Excellent for Historical reading

Excellent reading for any person interested in Civil War History. This disaster of the Sultana blowing up was overlooked. Many folks do not know about the Sultana. Take the time to read this book. It is excellent. Very well written.

  • A maritime tragedy, not an interesting read.

Dry reading on a wet topic. I have no trouble putting this book down.
