A discovered diary never intended for publication, was very minimally edited into a candid telling of the way it really was for an aspiring but inexperienced trapper; and also for all those who lived on the land at the time, and those who were moving westward with hopes of striking it rich on the bounty of the land. Very minimally edited. The story is chronological. Thousands of pages of hand written diary entries were discovered by the editor, in the old barn on the Rancho owned by the deceased Andrew Garcia . Our protagonist had little education but as the pages turn one observes improvement in his writing. I consider this book extremely valuable because it is a very candid view of native peoples, indians if you can not be offended, and western settlers, white people, but not ... The one history book I think is essential for anyone who wants to be truly educated about the rough life of trappers and miners. Reality is not pretty.
A true story of the settlement of the west and how rough life there was. The Indians were free but mostly savages. The settlers had little use for them and took advantage of opportunities to take the land. The federal government tried to maintain order but its employees had human failings. Among all these were white and red men with no moral code who butchered each other The second edition is somewhat sanitized in my opinion. I have both. Montana buffs delight
If anyone is interested in a bit of old Montana then pick up this gem and enjoy. I live just a stones throw away from where this book takes place and enjoyed it very much.

An awesome true story!
I would have loved to have known this man. What an insight into the Native American culture as it really was! I bought this book to give to a friend. I got the first book at the Lapwai Mission in Idaho. It looked like a good read. I was so enthralled with the book that I have recommended it to a lot of people. I was sorry when I came to the end of the book, it was like letting go of a wonderful friend!I would have loved to have known this man.
