Product Information

THE HORSE SOLDIERS, John Ford's only attempt at tackling the subject of the Civil War, is based on Grierson's Raid, part of the Union's assault on Vicksburg in April 1863. After a number of failed efforts at taking the Southern stronghold, Union leaders assign Col. John Marlowe (John Wayne), a railroad designer in civilian life, to lead a cavalry detachment to destroy a vital railroad hub at Newton Station, far behind Confederate lines. Marlowe's unit includes Major Kendall (William Holden), a cynical physician disgusted by the notion that there's glory in the carnage, and the politically ambitious Colonel Secord (Willis Bouchey). Marlowe temporarily appropriates the plantation of Southerner Hannah Hunter (Constance Towers) while in transit and is forced to take her along, in lieu of killing her, after she overhears his plans for Newton Station. As their journey continues, Marlowe realizes that he is much more interested in Hannah than in her political sympathies. Wayne and Holden give gritty, soulful performances, and William Clothier's photography is outstanding in a film that delves beneath simplistic notions of heroism to reveal something more complicated, grisly, and real.

The Horse Soldier VHS tape, starring John Wayne, depicts a historical raid.
When I first saw this movie, I was ten years old and John Wayne was my action hero of the day, and for many more decades, too. Anyway, this movie made a great impact on this southern kid, who saw an honorable Yankee lead his cavalry soldiers on a raid to destroy vital rail and supply lines for Vicksburg. Naturally, this whetted my appetite to find out more about 'The American Civil War', oh excuse me, 'The War of Northern Aggression'. So, in the long run, this movie helped me make up my mind on becoming a history teacher. As time moved on, I finished my military service in the Navy, of which John Wayne was a great action hero for the military, too. Then, Uncle Sam helped pay for my college education with a BA degree in history, from Wofford College. Also, the GI Bill helped pay for my ... Also, the GI Bill helped pay for my Masters in Social Studies and my 30 hours above the Masters, in Administration. These last two coming from Converse College and USC-Spartanburg (now, USC-Upstate). I never forgot about 'The Horse Soldier' as I taught my history classes. So, when I got a chance to establish a History course, called MODERN WARFARE at Spartanburg High School, I jumped at the chance. I got the senior elective course approved by the State Department, as well as letting the NCAA know that there truly was a class at SHS called "MODERN WARFARE". So, for the last seventeen years of my thirty-seven years of teaching, I taught this class at Spartanburg High School. This class included: 1) Lectures on periods of warfare, from the French and Indian through The Wars against Iraq and Afghanistan. 2) Table-top board simulation war games. 3) Computer simulation war games. 4) Guest speakers from various eras of wars, like Gen. Joe Foss, Gen. Robert Morgan, Com. Barry Hull, Capt. Joe Clark, and others. 5) VHS clips of certain war movies. I covered the eras of warfare, especially 'The Civil War', with my lectures and clips from VHS movies of the era. This is where I used 'The Horse Soldier' from the school's video library. Several scenes were used, such as the attack upon Newton Station and the destruction of the railroad lines and other war 'contraband'. Then, I used the segment for the boy's military academy to attack the Yankee encampment, as the boy cadets were supported by two artillery pieces. The students got a good chuckle out of one segment, when the southern drummer got a spanking. Overall, this was one of my favorite movies, with John Wayne, as the Colonel of a determined group of Yankees to carry out their mission in destroying some of the South's war making capabilities. When I retired in '08 from SHS, I signed up to teach at Spartanburg Technical College, now Spartanburg Community College, to keep me busy in teaching some night classes. One of the classes is 'US History to 1877'. So, as I reach 'The Civil War', did it once again, 'The War of Northern Aggression', I use clips from this video, as one doesn't have the time to show an entire video in high school or college. But, the clips get the point across for a certain type of military action, or battle, or tactic being utilized for that period of war. So, with two copies of 'The Horse Soldier' I can set it up to show those two battle sequences. I am very pleased to have a VHS version, as DVDs are too hard to move forward to the point of action to be shown. With the VHS, I can set it up to start at that specified point. I highly recommend this video to anyone interested in this era of warfare.

There's quite a bit of trivia attached to this particular film but you'll need to see it a few times first, so you might as well buy it. It belongs in the collection of all historians and militaria collectors. Ibought The Horse Soldiers because it is a good movie. I like John Wayne movies. I was looking for a movie that showed how women rode sidesaddle and the leading lady rides and jumps beautifully.
