Product Information

For more than a quarter century, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend has been the standard against which all other dog-training books have been measured. This expanded edition preserves the best features of the original classic while bringing the book fully up-to-date. The result: the ultimate training manual for a new generation of dog owners--and, of course, for their canine best friends. The Monks of New Skete have achieved international renown as breeders of German shepherds and as outstanding trainers of dogs of all breeds. Their unique approach to canine training, developed and refined over four decades, is based on the philosophy that understanding is the key to communication, compassion, and communion with your dog. How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend covers virtually every aspect of living with and caring for your dog, including: Selecting a dog (what breed? male? female? puppy or older dog?) to fit your lifestyle Where to get--and where not to get--a dog Reading a pedigree Training your dog or puppy--when, where, and how The proper use of praise and discipline Feeding, grooming, and ensuring your dog's physical fitness Recognizing and correcting canine behavioral problems The particular challenges of raising a dog where you live - in the city, country, or suburb The proper techniques for complete care of your pet at every stage of his or her life In its scope, its clarity, and its authority, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend remains unrivaled as a basic training guide for dog owners. Like no other book, this guide can help you understand and appreciate your dog's nature as well as his or her distinct personality--and in so doing, it can significantly enrich the life you share with your dog.

It is the most readable book on dog training for the layman that this reviewer has come across. Any person who has ever thought of owning a dog should read this engaging book from cover to cover. - LIBRARY JOURNALAn excellent course in canine care and obedience... full of sympathetic details and well-illustrated chapters. - NEWSDAYThe Monls of New Skete have turned out a book on virtually every phase of dog care, understanding and training. They have done so from a tremendous depth of affection for the animal- an affection that shows in phase after phase of the book. A fine book indeed. - WAHINGTON POST

  • Dog Book

Just started to read the book. So far very interesting, plus the price was right. I have been around dogs growing up, and have a few dogs. I am hoping the book will reinforce some of my previous dog training, plus learn some tricks

  • For the beginning dog owner

Although some of the training techniques may not necessarily work for every situation, if nothing else you will gain incredible insight into how the dog mind works. I keep buying this and giving it to friends who adopt new rescues, just to get them off on the right foot. Clearly the Monks are successful not only at raising top-notch GSDs but also rehabilitating all sorts of family canines. I would love to go visit one day and see things in person.

  • Best Dog Training Book

How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend is the best dog training manual for current and future dog owners. Your furry family members will thank you for not personifying their behaviors and better understanding their needs. I also highly recommend The Art if Training Your Puppy.

  • How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend by Monks of New Skete

Awesome book, I could hardly put it down. It was easy to follow and understand and very practical. Taught me things that I have definitely done wrong in the past and how to do them right from here on out. Even though the Monks raise German Shepherds their books are for training dogs of all breeds, and they give examples of such. Again an excellent book, I would highly recommend for anyone who already owns a dog or is contemplating getting a new puppy!!

  • Woof! Two Paws UP for this wonderful book!

This is the second book by the Monks of New Skete I have read and I can highly recommend both books! For those of us who cannot afford obedience classes for our dog, this book is a practical guide in helping us understand how to work with our canine friend. I would consider this a great book to recommend to someone who has a new puppy, or is working with obedience in an older dog for the first time.
