Jon Krakauer's bestselling nonfiction book about the life of Chris McCandless is finally brought to the big screen in INTO THE WILD. Directed by Sean Penn, the film opens in 1992, when Chris (Emile Hirsh) is a promising college graduate. Shortly after graduation, Chris gives his life savings to charity, burns all of his identification, and begins hitchhiking across America, his ultimate goal being Alaska. Citing passages from his heroes, Thoreau and Jack London, he is determined to escape society and get back to nature. He blows from town to town like a tumbleweed, hopping trains, camping with aging hippies (Catherine Keener and Brian Dierker), working briefly with a farmer (Vince Vaughan), and befriending a widowed leather worker (Hal Holbrook). He revels in his newfound freedom, but meanwhile, his parents (Marcia Gay Harden and William Hurt) have no idea where he is, and are sick with worry. While their relationship with Chris was already troubled, they are nonetheless devastated by his disappearance. Chris's sister, Carine (Jane Malone), narrates much of the film, offering her reflections on the effect Chris's absence has on his family. Chris finally makes it to Alaska, where he hikes out to a remote campsite and discovers an abandoned bus. He manages to survive there for a few months living off the land, but he eventually runs out of supplies and becomes trapped, leading to his tragic end.INTO THE WILD bounces around chronologically, jumping back and forth from the start of Chris's journey to his final few weeks living aboard the bus. This works to great effect as the storylines begin to merge and the tension and dread mount, and we see the fate that will eventually befall Chris. Penn obviously had great admiration for his subject, and while the film appears to differ from the book in places, it nevertheless paints a heartbreaking portrait of this young man's short but fascinating life.

    ❤️ this book, movie is good too!

    I’m always borrowing my copies out to people so I have purchased this book & movie at least half a dozen times each. Who doesn’t dream of going off the grid? It is way more difficult than one thinks. True story!

    Was for my boyfriend but we broke up last night

    It really was for my boyfriend but we broke up last night so now I am going to sell it to a local hobby store. Sorry. Just wanted to be honest about not really opening up the product to be able to fully verify. I purchased it but didn't use it with him. Sorry.

    Good movie.

    Worth watching. However, not once is it explained whether this guy was mentally challenged which appears to be the case?

    Amazing!

    The story of Christopher McCandless' adventure on the road is both inspiring and uplifting as well as terrifying and tragic. This movie takes you through the gamut of emotions that one is likely to experience in a movie. As I've just finished watching it for the first time, I'm not sure if I have the words to properly express the experience. But this I know. I was impressed with everything about this film. The writing, the acting, the casting, the cinematography, the directing, the music, everything seamlessly creates an experience that draws you into the story and helps you to feel what the characters are feeling. This is quite possibly one of the best movies I've ever seen! If I tell you too much I'm afraid it might detract from your enjoyment, Just see it. It's awesome!

    into the wild.....excellent one of the great adventures

    It was just a real like you knew the actual person being depicted in the story..a real humble person who everyone should strive to be like and step back and really look at what we created as a society...that we are brainwashed as a society to see everything the corporational way....where we are duped out of thinking out of the box how incramentalism rules our everyday lives....money is worshipped as a idol...we need to go back to nature....the only way we can be free from the grid of the system.......sean penn did a awesome job making this a great journey to finding out who we really are....a definate must see.....
