Reviews
Praise for  The Mammy "I think Brendan O'Carroll is Agnes Browne, and if he's not, he's done one hell of a job capturing the absolute essence of a widowed mother in working-class Dublin."-- Anjelica Huston "How to lose weight: Read  The Mammy . You will laugh your arse off and your tears will do away with your water-retention problem. It is an uproariously funny account of growing up in inner-city Dublin--a laugh-out loud book with a Dickensian twist to it."-- Malachy McCourt, author of  A Monk Swimming "Hilarious and irreverent. A must-read."-- Gabriel Byrne Praise for  The Chisellers "A brilliant book."-- Sunday Independent  (London)   "By turns funny, wise and heartbreaking, this Irish Tales of the City is O'Carroll's second book in his Mrs. Browne trilogy; the first,  The Mammy , received high praise after publication in the U.S. last year. Featuring eccentric characters who are charming, irreverent and believable, the story continues in 1973 with Agnes Browne at center stage... This lively novel features a wedding, a funeral and an ending that will melt the hardest heart. Readers will eagerly await the third book in this series."-- Publishers Weekly   Praise for  The Granny "O'Carroll is a popular stand-up comic, and he writes with an easy sense of humor... winning and likable."-- Kirkus Reviews   "These Dubliners are irresistibly charming... Tales of working-class Irish life now fill bookshelves, but there's space aplenty for O'Carroll's sturdy contribution."-- Publishers Weekly   Praise for  The Young Wan "An almost surefire winner... one of those books that demands to be read in one sitting."-- The Irish Voice, Praise for The Mammy "I think Brendan O'Carroll is Agnes Browne, and if he's not, he's done one hell of a job capturing the absolute essence of a widowed mother in working-class Dublin."-- Anjelica Huston "How to lose weight: Read The Mammy . Synopsis
The Mrs. Browne trilogy became an instant bestselling success in author Brendan O'Carroll 's native Ireland. Similarly, when Plume introduced The Mammy (the first book in the series, May 1999) in the United States, it was greeted with overwhelming enthusiasm from American readers. Fans of Agnes Browne craving further hilarious and heartwarming adventures will be delighted with The Chisellers . Agnes, the lovable and determined heroine, returns with her seven children--whom she affectionately calls "the chisellers"--all struggling to make their way in the world with varying degrees of success. To make matters more difficult, as Agnes struggles along the bumpy road of parenting, she learns that the family is about to be forced out of their tenement home in the name of urban renewal. Pierre, Agnes' persistent suitor, is thankfully on hand to console her. Like all good Irish stories, The Chisellers includes a wedding and a funeral, much laughter and some tears--and it is sure to please newcomers as well as loyal fans of this terrific series.

Very satisfied! Reliable seller with fair prices. One ordered item turned out to be sold during the process, but was promptly refunded. Other ordered items arrived eralier than estimated. They were neatly packed and in the condition described. Contact with seller prior to the order wasn't possible, but communication afterwards was spotless.

Item is as described in post, great quality, clean, not damaged, great purchase. I'd like to point out that it was also shipped promptly, arrived on time, but the local post office refused to send me any notification of it arriving. Therefore I only got it today, almost a month late. The seller is at no fault, they shipped it on time. So I am highly satisfied with my purchase and the seller, highly recommend them for anyone on Ebay. Great books at great prices, amazing experience.

  • book The Chisellers by Brendan O'Carroll

I bought this book to read because I had a friend give me a copy of the 1st book,The Mammy. This book is the 2nd in the 3 book series by this author. What a wonderful read. It is about an irish family with 7 kids. It is set in Ireland in the 1960's. The father dies, and the 7 kids are raised by their wonderful mother. In this the 2nd book continues with the kids growing up, Mammy getting older and how they hold together as a family. One of the best books I've read in long time. These people will be in my memory for many years. I would recomend this book and the other 2 books. There is humor, tears, love and family bonding. The other 2 books are The Mammy and the third is Granny.

  • I love the three books. I had read the them many years ago, lent it to someone and never got them returned, so I ordered a new (used) set and can't wa

All three second hand books arrived in decent shape.

  • Must read.

You'll lose yourself in these wonderful biographical books. They are sad in some ways, but hilarious in most other ways. Read them all!

  • Funny and Serious at the same time

The Chisellers is a great book, written by a wonderful person. Brendan O'Carroll is one of the absolute funniest people I have ever encountered. The book is written in a very serious, but at the same time a funny, curious and entertaining way. Love it! Seldom there are any books written the way like the Chisellers or any other of Brendan's books.

  • Great book!
